Ewald Mies war tätig als Steinmetz, vorrangig zur Ausstattung von Bauten mit Natursteinen und bei der Anfertigung von Grabsteinen. Gleichzeitig hatte er das Selbstverständnis eines Architekten und bearbeitete schon früh gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Architekturprojekte wie das Bismarck-Denkmal in Bingen 1910-1911, sowie später beispielsweise zwei Einfamilienhäuser in Ostbelgien, Haus Homburg 1936-1937 und Haus Klöters 1937. Im Laufe der Forschungen stellte sich eine überraschende gemeinsame Unternehmung der beiden Brüder in der Eifel heraus, bei der sie für einen bemerkenswerten Kunden tätig waren. Dies führte nun zur Eintragung eines Bodendenkmals und wird im Folgenden vorgestellt.

Die Eifel war aufgrund ihrer besonderen Geologie seit jeher ein reichhaltiges Gebiet für die Gewinnung von Naturstein unterschiedlichster Sorten. Besonders nach 1933 wuchs das Interesse an den dortigen Natursteinvorkommen überregional an, da das reichsweite Bauprogramm der Nationalsozialisten, allen voran die größenwahnsinnigen Anlagen des Reichsparteitagsgeländes in Nürnberg, eine immense Nachfrage an Steinmaterial mit sich brachten.
