Content: Dick und Doof als Ehemänner (1933): The gimmick in this Laurel and Hardy comedy short is that Oliver Hardy plays not only himself but also Mrs. Laurel, and Stan Laurel plays both himself and Mrs. Hardy. Most of the comedy consists of bickering between the couples, with everyone getting on everyone else's nerves. [www.rinkworks.com]

Content: Dick und Doof im Krankenhaus (1932): Ollie breaks a leg; while he's bedridden in the hospital, Laurel comes to visit and unwittingly wreaks havoc. The comedy is great, though slow in spots, and the short contains one of the team's legendary mutilations of a Model-T. Yet the finale contains one of the poorest uses of a backscreen ever, unconvincing even for the time. [www.rinkworks.com]

    Uniform Title: Slapstick Encyclopedia
Content: A veritable gold mine of rarities and little-known treats, "Slapstick Encyclopedia" lives up to its title as a stupendous compendium of silent-era comedy. Spanning the entire spectrum of slapstick from 1909 to 1927, this definitive collection (curated by film historians David Shepard and Joe Adamson) dutifully credits Keystone Cops creator Mack Sennett as the founder of the slapstick phenomenon. But it reaches far beyond Sennett (who alienated most of his popular stars) to acknowledge nearly every major and minor slapstick star and style. The development of slapstick, which had its roots in vaudeville, is witnessed chronologically, mixing the manic pie-fight sensibility of Sennett's Keystone hits with the lesser-known, more sophisticated parlor-room comedy of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew, while legendary black vaudevillian Bert Williams plies his popular trade in a Biograph short from 1916. Uniform Title: Brats ; Helpmates
Content: Vaterfreuden (1930): Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy play both the fathers and their unruly children in this two-reel comedy. The really funny thing about this film is that as the kids, Laurel and Hardy don't behave much differently as they generally do as adults. The relationship is basically the same between the two youngsters, and little Ollie usually suffers the most damage. The father/son effect was created by making two sets exactly the same, with one set being more than twice normal size, to make the kid Laurel and Hardy appear child-sized. The two sets are seamlessly combined in several scenes, so we can see, for example, the fathers playing checkers while their sons are a few feet away, playing with alphabet blocks. There's not much plot -- the kids misbehave and are sent to bed early, but before they crawl into bed, they create more havoc - and an overflowing bathtub that Ollie doesn't discover until it has flooded the whole bathroom. Because not every theater was yet wired for sound, a silent version of Brats was made, which still exists today, in addition to a colorized version released in the late 1990s. (Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide)
Content: Wir sitzen in der Klemme (1932): Ollie receives an unexpected telegram. His wife is arriving home at noon after a trip to her mother’s in Chicago and the house is a complete mess from the big party that Ollie had thrown the previous night. Ollie enlists Stanley to help clear up. Needless to say, things can only get worse... An absolutely hilarious film, considered by many to be one of the best Laurel & Hardy two-reelers, there are many memorable routines in the film, although one of them (Ollie putting his head through a cupboard drawer) is inexplicably (and completely unacceptably) cut from the colourised version. This 1980’s HRS colourised version of Helpmates also notoriously changes the opening titles and cuts the camera pan of the house in a mess to a series of three still dissolves, presumably to remove the badly damaged frames that can be seen in the black and white version and edits down Stan and Ollie’s phone conversation. It’s nothing less than an abomination of one of the duo’s finest films. [dvdtimes.co.uk]
