Vor genau 100 Jahren erschien die 1. Auflage., 5 weitere, davon 2 nach dem 2. Weltkrieg, folgten. Es war die bekannteste Publikation des reichen, beruflich ungebundenen, reise-erfahrenen (Spanien/Nordafrika, Weltreise) Intellektuellen, der für die damals bekannte Zeitschrift "Pan" schrieb und Mitarbeiter Hofmannsthals wurde, 1912 die Cranach-Presse gründete, nach 1918 Gesandter in Polen und Mitglied der Deutschen Friedensgesellschaft war. Sein Mexiko-Buch ist eine impressionistische, essayistische, stellenweise snobistische und auch typisierende Darstellung. Nicht die heute wichtigen ethnisch-kulturellen, soziökonomischen Probleme sind sein Thema, vielmehr - unter unreflektiert europäischem Gesichtswinkel und nicht selten herablassend - der tropische Mensch, die tropische Gesellschaft, das Rassenproblem. Interessant als exotischer Reisebericht wie als historisches Zeugnis des in den Köpfen vieler Intellektueller herumspukenden Zeitgeistes vor der letzten Jahrhundertwende.
