Nach "Das Ende der Zeit" (ID-B 48/17) neuer Thriller des Autors. Man könnte ihn den Werdegang eines Serienkillers nennen, gegenwärtige Handlung und Thornhills Vergangenheit wechseln ständig. Als 12-jähriger Junge Boy hat er bei den Entscheidungsschlachten des Sezessionskriegs zugunsten der Nordstaaten bereits tragische Erfahrungen gesammelt, die sein heutiges Leben ausmachen. Jetzt kehrt er, 1893, nach Chicago zurück, wo soeben die Weltausstellung mit vielen technischen Wundern Millionen Besucher anlockt. Er entwickelt ein berauschendes Gefühl des Tötens, das er nicht unterdrücken kann. Dazu setzt er sein scharfes Rasiermesser ein, gibt aber an, nur die zu töten, die es verdient haben. Natürlich wird er verfolgt, auch von der Polizei und begibt sich immer wieder in fast aussichtslose Zweikämpfe, bei denen er ein Auge verliert. Weil er sich mit den Falschen anlegt, ist er plötzlich der Gejagte, kann aber - gewitzt wie er ist - am Ende doch überleben. Die ziemlich brutale Handlung ist nichts für Zartbesaitete.
