In dem Glauben, nach einer monatelangen gefahrvollen Reise die Ostküste Indiens erreicht zu haben, betrat am 12. Oktober 1492 eine Gruppe spanischer Seeleute unter Führung des Genuesers Christoph Columbus eine kleine Insel. Endlich schien gefunden, wonach Columbus unermüdlich gesucht hatte - der westliche Weg nach Indien. Was die Seeleute nicht wissen konnten: Das kleine, von den Eingeborenen Guanahani genannte Eiland gehörte zu einer Inselkette, die einem bis dahin unbekannten Kontinent vorgelagert war.
