Fujita Tsuguji : What should be known on the making of war paintings ? Fujita is acknowledged as one of the great artists of the École de Paris in the 1920’s. But it is less common knowledge that, during the Second World War, he was one of the active members of the Japanese association of military painters. So, as better to understand the motives that spurred him to paint these great huge battle sceneries to-day at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, it is interesting to refer to the articles he wrote at the time. Hence, the present translation of a famous article published in 1944 : What should be known on the making of war paintings ? One finds there that Fujita involved himself in this work with a very particular zeal and that, for many reasons : sentimental, political, but also aesthetic, which explains his present rediscovery.
