Welche Umstände waren es, die Meisterwerke in der Musik entstehen ließen? Anhand der Lebenswege und der persönlichen Schicksale der Komponisten sowie des jeweiligen sozialgeschichtlichen und kulturellen Umfelds der Zeit geht Palézieux dieser Frage nach. Seine (zwangsläufig sehr subjektive) Auswahl von 14 Sternstunden der Musik umfasst u.a. Bachs h-Moll-Messe, Händels Messias, Mozarts Don Giovanni, Beethovens Missa solemnis oder Verdis Nabucco, Dvoráks Sinfonie aus der Neuen Welt oder Schuberts Streichquartett Der Tod und das Mädchen. Auch Carlo Gesualdo ist mit seinen Madrigalbüchern oder Heinrich Schütz mit seinen Chorwerken vertreten. Die Musik der Gegenwart spart Palézieux erfreulicherweise nicht aus und würdigt John Cages 4'33'' und Ligetis Atmosphères. Palézieux liefert keine trockene musiktheoretische Analyse der Werke, sondern eine ohne musikgeschichtliche Vorkenntnisse verständliche Annäherung an große Werke der abendländischen Musikkultur und ihre Schöpfer. Das preiswerte, gut zu lesende Bändchen eignet sich schon für kleinere Bestände. (2)
