Reinhold Messner (hier zuletzt ID-B 22/17) hat nicht nur alle 14 Achttausender bestiegen, auch in der Antarktis war er mehrmals unterwegs und 1989/90 gelang ihm sogar die Durchquerung des antarktischen Kontinents zu Fuß. Hier erzählt er die Lebensgeschichte des britischen Antarktisforschers Frank Wild (1873-1939) und rekonstruiert die legendäre Endurance-Expedition. Von 1914 bis 1916 begleitet Wild seinen Freund, den Polarforscher Ernest Shackleton, und 26 Männer, die als erste die Antarktis durchqueren wollen. Ihr Schiff, die Endurance, wird aber bald vom Packeis zerstört und während Shackleton aufbricht, um Hilfe zu holen, bleiben unter Wilds Führung 22 Männer zurück und warten bei 50 Grad Kälte 4 Monate lang in arktischer Nacht auf Rettung. Allein durch seine Ausstrahlung gelingt es Wild, bei den Männern die Hoffnung auf ein Überleben aufrechtzuerhalten - eine Führungspersönlichkeit und eine Kunst, nie aufzugeben, die Messner fasziniert und über die er packend erzählt.
