Theo muss nach einem Aufstand seines Vaters Friedrich von Isenberg gegen den korrupten Erzbischof von Cöln mit ansehen, wie dieser als Verräter hingerichtet wird. Die Burg der Familie wird zerstört. Freunde seines Vaters machen Theo mit der Vergangenheit Friedrichs vertraut, sodass Theo erkennt, dass sein Vater zu Unrecht verunglimpft wird. Er schwört, Besitz und Ehre der Familie wieder herzustellen. In einer Eliteschule wächst er unter schwierigsten Bedingungen zu einem außergewöhnlichen Kämpfer heran, der Menschenwürde, Solidarität, Vertrauen und Verzeihen die Grundlage der Beziehung zu seinen Kampfgefährten bilden lässt. Autor Henning Isenberg, nicht verwandt mit dem Adelsgeschlecht, aber aus der Isenberger Gegend stammend, lässt die Leser eintauchen in eine Geschichte, die auf historischen Tatsachen beruht und die beim Lesen eine Art "Game of Thrones"-Sog erzeugt. Lediglich die vielen handelnden Personen mit ähnlichen Namen verwirren, ein Personenregister am Ende des Buches ist dabei hilfreich. Spannend dargeboten wird hier ein Stück deutsche Geschichte lebendig. Breite Empfehlung.
