Die vielseitige Bestseller-Publizistin (zuletzt u.a. "Deutschland, Lutherland") nimmt sich hier des ambivalenten Beethovenbildes an (Nonkonformismus/Selbstzweifel, Empfindsamkeit/Streitlust, Genialität gepaart mit exzessivem Alkoholkonsum usw.), das uns auch heute noch irritiert. Anhand von sechs für sie ikonografischen Werken im Spiegel der Originalquellen (Briefwechsel, Äusserungen von Zeitgenossen, Presse) sowie neuerer Forschung arbeitet sie schlüssig die Widersprüche in Werk, Charakter und Rezeption heraus. Die Auswahl der Werke scheint zwar der Zielgruppe geschuldet (u.a. Mondscheinsonate, Für Elise), auch die Werkanalysen gehen selten über Konzertführerniveau hinaus, die Fakten aber sind gut recherchiert, die Folgerungen logisch: z.B. wird nachvollziehbar vermittelt, warum Beethoven, aus der Tradition des Improvisierens am Instrument kommend, zu dem kompositorischen Neuerer wurde, der er war.
