Das Leben des Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) war ein einziges Abenteuer und ein lebenslanger Kampf mit Unglück und Armut. Er stand zunächst im Dienst eines päpstlichen Legaten, dann wurde er Soldat. Bei der Schlacht von Lepanto wurde er verwundet. Als Achtundzwanzigjähriger geriet er in die Hände algerischer Piraten und damit für fünf Jahre in Gefangenschaft. Danach trat er in die Dienste des Königs, wurde Proviantkommissar und später Steuereinnehmer. Mit seinem "Don Quijote" schrieb Cervantes eines der berühmtesten Bücher der Weltliteratur. Er konzipierte das Werk als Satire auf die zahlreichen Ritteromane seiner Zeit. Aber dem genialen Autor geriet die phantastische Figur des Ritters von der traurigen Gestalt unversehens zu einem gültigen Abbild des Menschen. Der Kampf des Traumes mit der Wirklichkeit, den jeder Mensch zu bestehen hat, wird in Cervantes' Werk in der herrlichsten Weise ausgetragen. Un man sagt nicht zu Unrecht, daß, wer Cervantes' Buch gelesen hat, nie mehr ganz unglücklich werden könnte... (Umschlagtext)
