Der in Kairo lebende (Reise-) Journalist und ARD-Korrespondent mit Schwerpunkt "arabische Welt" stellt das Land am Nil mit Empathie, dabei anschaulich und informativ, vor. Eine Passage seines Schlusskapitels benennt der Autor augenzwinkernd "Wie (über-)lebt man in Kairo?", kommt dabei zu ähnlichen Erkenntnissen wie Hessler in "Die Stimmen vom Nil" (2020): ein hektischer, chaotischer Moloch, in dem ALw der Menschen Ägyptens (ca. 25 Mill.) lebt. Als Hauptstadt spiegelt sie auch die Probleme und Befindlichkeiten des ganzen Landes. Stryjak lebt und arbeitet dort seit 1999 als freier (Reise-)Journalist und ARD-Korrespondent mit Schwerpunkt "arabische Welt". - Seine Reportagen hat er geschickt und anschaulich verknüpft. Als Ganzes sind sie eine Liebeserklärung vor allem an die Menschen, die er als offen, gastfreundlich und interessiert zu schätzen gelernt hat. Grossen Raum nimmt die jüngere Geschichte ein, der "ägyptische Frühling" 2011, die Herrschaft der Muslimbruderschaft, der Putsch 2013, dem die Militärdiktatur unter Präsident al-Sisi folgte. Beleuchtet wird auch das gespannte Verhältnis zwischen Moslems und Christen, die "widerborstige" Kulturszene, die Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie, insbesondere mit Blick auf den Tourismus. (2)
