Aus der in diesem Jahr noch zu erwartenden Flut von Mauer-Texten und der schon vorliegenden schwer zu überschauenden Literaturfülle wird dieses Buch, eine Übersetzung der englischen Ausgabe von 2006, auf jeden Fall herausragen und bis zur nächsten Aktenfreigabe Standard bleiben. Der englische Publizist und Historiker ist tief in die Quellen eingetaucht, hat Interviews geführt und gelesen, was auf dem Markt zu holen ist. Seine minutiöse Darstellung ist in einer dem Thema entsprechenden unaufgeregten Diktion gehalten, er argumentiert ausgewogen und versucht die Ursachen für das Verhalten der verschiedenen staatlichen und individuellen Akteure freizulegen. Auch wenn so viel Neues nicht zu würdigen ist: Die Gesamtsicht, die globale Einbettung und immer wieder die ausgewogene Argumentation erlauben es, dieses Buch herauszuheben. Allerdings war der General Hoffmann, der bei Taylor 1989 und 1992 erscheint (Seite 509 und 520), schon 1985 verstorben. Ein spannendes Buch, das breit einsetzbar und sehr zu empfehlen ist, mit ausführlichen Registern. (2)
