Die sorgfältige wissenschaftliche Edition (eine historisch-kritische Gesamtausgabe steht noch aus) macht erstmals die Tagebücher Jüngers aus dem 1. Weltkrieg zugänglich. 19-jährig, als diese Notizen einsetzen, stürzt sich Jünger mit einer ganz der zeitgenössischen Kriegseuphorie ergebenen Todesverachtung auf die Schlachtfelder Frankreichs. Mit knappen Notaten, ergänzt von kleinen Skizzen registriert er die Gräuel neben ihm wie auch die militärischen Abläufe und die Alltäglichkeiten des Soldatenlebens (inklusive erotischer Erfahrungen) als großes Abenteuer. Meist spontan und ohne literarische Ambition, aber mit einem gehörigen Schuss Herrenreiterprosa (und hier inklusive aller Fehler wiedergegeben) entsteht so ein plastisches, überaus detailreiches, für das jüngersche Werk wie für den Alltag des 1. Weltkriegs gleichermaßen aufschlussreiches Rohmaterial, aus dem der Autor später u.a. sein berühmt-berüchtigtes, immer noch nachgefragtes "In Stahlgewittern" generiert hat (46. Die erstmals veröffentlichten Kriegstagebücher Ernst Jüngers vermitteln ein ungefiltertes, plastisches Bild vom Alltag an der Front in Frankreich im 1. Weltkrieg. Sie waren das Rohmaterial, aus dem Jünger später u.a. sein berühmt-berüchtigtes "In Stahlgewittern" (1920) entwickelt hat.
