Esmeralda (vgl. Band 1: ID-A 10/13) kümmert sich liebevoll um den von der Obrigkeit so ungerecht bestraften Glöckner und präsentiert sich als moderne Frau, die ihre Ziele verfolgt - anders als ihr tölpelhafter Ehemann oder die anderen männlichen Lichtgestalten der Geschichte. Wunderbare Zeichnungen von Bastide lassen den Priester wie einen Vampir erscheinen, als Esmeralda statt seiner den Galgen wählt. Ebenfalls viel Raum nehmen die grausame Bestrafung von Quasimodo, die Geschichten um Phoebus und das tragische Wiedersehen Esmeraldas mit ihrer Mutter ein. Um eine so epische Geschichte in 2 Bänden zu komprimieren, muss man sich auf das Erzählen der Highlights konzentrieren. Das gelingt den beiden Autoren allerdings vortrefflich und sie finden sogar noch den Platz, nach der dynamisch erzählten, opulent illustrierten Hauptgeschichte die Rahmenhandlung ganz in Ruhe im Funny-Stil zu Ende zu führen. Eine etwas andere und sehr gelungene Hugo-Adaption! Gern zur Vervollständigung empfohlen.
