In de zomer van 1943 verscheen vanuit de Universiteit van Amsterdam een rapport getiteld Die Anthropologie der sogenannten portugiesischen Juden in den Niederlanden . Het was opgesteld door de fysisch antropoloog Arie de Froe en bevatte foto s van een groot aantal Portugese Joden. De conclusie van het werk luidde dat Portugese Joden meer tot het westmediterrane of het alpiene ras behoorden, wat betekende dat zij gesperrt waren: uitgesloten van deportatie. Ook met individuele attesten heeft De Froe in de Tweede Wereldoorlog veel joden weten te ontjoodsen . Tegen de verdrukking in heeft hij zijn wetenschappelijke expertise bewust gebruikt en misbruikt om mensenlevens te redden. Om die reden werd hij postuum geëerd met de Yad Vashem-onderscheiding en door het Holocaustmuseum in Jeruzalem tot Rechtvaardige onder de Volkeren verklaard. De Froe s verhaal is interessant in het licht van de hedendaagse discussies over wetenschappelijke en professionele integriteit. Is het mogelijk om waardevrije wetenschap te bedrijven? Gaat menselijke integriteit boven de professionele?
