Das Dasein eines Menschen wird in unserer Gesellschaft entscheidend durch jenen Komplex von Tätigkeiten und damit verbundenen Pflichten und Rechten mitgeprägt, den man als Beruf, Berufsposition oder Berufsrolle bezeichnet. Bereits als Kind wächst man in einem Elternhaus auf, dessen Lebensstil und Bekanntenkreis vom Beruf des Vaters und (oder) der Mutter beeinflußt werden. Viele Jahre der Jugendzeit sind angefüllt mit der Vorbereitung auf den eigenen Beruf. Steht man schließlich selbst in einer Berufstätigkeit, so bestimmt sich von daher weitgehend der Tagesablauf, der Kreis der Menschen, mit denen man Umgang hat, der eigene Lebensstandard und Lebensstil, das Ansehen, das man genießt und anderes mehr. Die Zahl der Berufspositionen ist in unserer Gesellschaft heute verhältnismäßig groß. Das war keineswegs immer der Fall, sondern die starke Differenzierung der Berufe hat erst mit der sogenannten Industrialisierung eingesetzt. In deren Verlauf sind einige der früher vorhandenen Berufe verschwunden und viele neue entstanden. Diese Veränderungen haben manchen Menschen neue Lebenschancen eröffnet, anderen aber auch Schwierigkeiten und Not gebracht. Die Wandlungen im Berufsbereich unserer Gesellschaft, die vor allem mit der Industrialisierung begannen, sind bisher keineswegs abgeschlossen. Durch die sogenannte Automatisierung haben sie in den letzten Jahrzehnten neue Impulse erhalten. Die von ihnen ausgehenden Wirkungen berühren die verschiedensten Bereiche des gesellschaftlichen Lebens, und die Regierung unseres Staates versucht, sie in vielfältiger Form zu beeinflussen. Maßnahmen zur Berufsberatung, Berufsausbildung und Umschulung sind Beispiele dafür
