Content: As personal computers have become more available, there has been a great deal of optimism for educational reform through wide computer use, both at school and in the home. Beyond Technology's Promise, first published in 1994, takes a hard look at the home computer scene. The research reported in the book focuses on whether families are using computers to help children learn academic skills and, if so, how well they are doing it. The three year, qualitative investigation provides contextual information crucial to our understanding of how computers are really being used. The authors draw the not so surprising conclusion that most children use computers to play games. They therefore propose directions that must be taken in order to facilitate the educational use of home computers or any other promising educational technology. In so doing, they examine such topics as parental leadership, the home-school computer connection, and the role of gender in home computing use.

Note: Daniel Bell hat 1973 in seinem Buch tiber die 'Postindustrielle Gesellschaft' die politische Partizipation als eines der 'axialen Prinzipien' der Strukturierung dieses sich in der Entwicklung be­ findlichen Gesellschaftstypus bezeichnet. Wie immer man zum theo­ retischen und analytischen status dieser Gesellschaftsbetrachtung stehen mag, fast zwanzig Jahre nach dem Entstehen des genannten Buches hat sich auch empirisch bestatigt, dan Partizipation einer der Brennpunkte des zeitgenossischen politischen Diskurses in den westlichen Demokratien ist. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, in ihrer Verbindung qualifizie­ render und quantifizierender Betrachtungsweisen dem Wissen urn die Dimensionen und Hintergrtinde politi scher Beteiligung einige neue Gesichtspunkte hinzuzuftigen. Es liegt in der Natur der in dieser Arbeit hauptsachlich verwendeten Daten, dan viele Beztige zu der international vergleichenden Untersuchung hergestellt werden, die in den siebziger Jahren erstmals die Einstellungen auch zu direk­ ten Formen der politischen Beteiligung in den Blick nahm: die Political Action-Studie (Barnes, Kaase et al. 1979). Zu Dank verpflichtet ist die Verfasserin der deutschen Wissenschaftler­ gruppe (Klaus R. Allerbeck, Max Kaase, Hans-Dieter Klingemann) fur deren Bereitschaft, die bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht ausgewerteten Daten des qualitativen Panels des deutschen Studienteils einschlienlich der maschinenlesbaren aufbereiteten Befragungsvolltexte ftir die vorliegende Arbeit zur Verftigung zu stellen

This gentle comedy is the debut film of renowned German director Andreas Dresen. Silent Country took the 1993 International Film Festival in Berlin by storm and received both the Hesse Film Award and the German Critics’ Award.
