Gruen investigates a remarkable phenomenon in religious and literary history: the freedom with which Jewish writers in antiquity retold and recast, sometimes distorted or bypassed, biblical narratives that ostensibly had the status of sacred texts. Gruen asks the question of what prompted such tampering with tales that carried divine authority, and what implications this widespread practice of liberal revising had for attitudes toward the sacrality of the scriptures in general. Gruen focuses upon writings of the Second Temple period, an era of the deep integration of Jewish history and the Greco-Roman world. Gruen brings to the task the training of a classicist and ancient historian rather than that of a biblical textual critic or a rabbinics scholar, not pursuing the commentaries of the later rabbis with their very different approaches, methods, and goals. Note: Der wichtigste Bestandteil des Betons, welchen wir heute mit Recht als den vielseitigsten, billigsten, bequemsten und unter normalen Ver­ hältnissen beständigsten Baustoff betrachten, ist der Zement. Dieser verkittet, mit 70-90% Kies oder Steinschlag und Wasser gemischt, diesen Zuschlag zu einem Gestein, und erlaubt auf diese Weise die schnelle Herstellung ausgedehnter, "aus einem Guß" bestehender Steinbauwerke von beliebigen Formen, da die lose Schütt- oder Guß­ masse des unverarbeiteten Betons leicht bewegt und verarbeitet werden kann und in kurzer Zeit zu einem zusammenhängenden Gefüge erstarrt und erhärtet. Die Natur ist uns in der Herstellung von Betonen bereits voran­ gegangen: Große Teile gewaltiger Gebirge bestehen aus den Konglo­ meraten und Sandsteinen, das sind Kiesgeschiebe alter Bachläufe und frühere Sandwüsten, deren Kies oder Sand durch Kieselsäure und Kalk, die sich aus eingedrungenem Wasser abschieden, zu festem Gestein ver­ bunden wurden. Während aber die Natur zu dem Verkittungsprozeß Jahrtausende brauchte, ermöglicht der Zement ähnliche Bindungsvorgänge in wenigen Stunden und Tagen: Das Wunderbare, welches in dieser Tatsache einer fast plötzlichen Verwandlung eines losen Steingemenges in einen zu­ sammenhängenden Stein von hoher Widerstandsfähigkeit liegt, wird in­ folge der Gewöhnung an die Alltäglichkeit des Vorganges nicht mehr genug gewürdigt. Wir sind heute tatsächlich in der Lage, ein festes Naturgestein am Ort seines Vorkommens durch den Steinbrecher in einen leicht versendbaren Schotter zu brechen und am Bauplatz einen neuen Stein, den erhärteten "Beton", der annähernd die gleiche Festig­ keit hat wie der Ausgangsstoff, neu erstehen zu lassen
