Die Geißlerzüge der Jahre 1348/49 stellten eine unmittelbare Reaktion der Menschen auf den Schwarzen Tod dar, als dessen Ursache man den Zorn Gottes über die Schlechtigkeit der Welt betrachtete. Keine zwanzig Jahre später formierte sich in Thüringen um den Anführer Konrad Schmid eine häretische Sekte, die bis zum Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts immer wieder in den Quellen fassbar wird. Ihre Angehörigen sahen die Selbstgeißelung als einziges Heilsmittel an und lehnten Kirche, Klerus und Sakramente ab. In dieser Vermischung von radikaler Bußpraxis und progressiver Kirchenkritik stehen die Geißler am Übergang zur Reformation und sind doch zugleich als ein Phänomen spätmittelalterlicher Frömmigkeit zu betrachten.
