Schirrmachers Essay (Hörbuch zur Besprechung vorgesehen), ausgelöst durch die weltweite Finanzkrise seit 2008, thematisiert untergründig einen kulturgeschichtlich noch viel bedeutsameren Kontrollverlust. Der Autor wandelt uneingestanden in den Spuren linker und rechter Kulturkritik: Automatisierung, Computerisierung, Rationalisierung - im Sinne gesteigerter Rechenhaftigkeit - reduzieren den Menschen im Zeitalter des "Informationskapitalismus" auf einen kalt berechnenden "homo oeconomicus", der im Mitmenschen nur den Kontrahenten sieht und nur auf seinen eigenen Vorteil bedacht ist. Damit agiere er ganz im Sinne der Spieltheorie, die Schirrmacher von den Hasardeuren der atomaren Konfrontation im Kalten Krieg auf die Spekulanten in ungezügelten Finanzmärkten übergegangen sieht. Die wiederholt eingestreuten zentralen Thesen des Buches hätten wohl kürzer dargestellt werden können. Dennoch bietet das Buch zahlreiche Denkanstöße, wobei vor allem die historischen Kapitel spannend und lesenswert sind.
