In der Fortsetzung von "Maxie und ein Fisch mit Fernweh" bekommt Maxie Besuch von ihrer besten Freundin Paula aus England. Die kennt sich angeblich in Beziehungsfragen bestens aus und behauptet, Mama Dr. Klementine Buntschuh und Sebastian Pfeffer, der Vater von Maxies bestem Kumpel Jonas, seien bis über beide Ohren ineinander verknallt. Diese Vorstellung gefällt den Buntschuh- und Pfeffersprösslingen überhaupt nicht. Aber zuerst wollen sie sich Gewissheit verschaffen und lassen sich die abenteuerlichsten Aktionen einfallen, um den Erwachsenen auf die Schliche zu kommen. Doch die haben schliesslich eine ganz andere Überraschung in petto. Buntschuhs und Pfeffers wollen die Häuser tauschen und Mama Buntschuh kann endlich ihre Tierambulanz einrichten. Die nahtlose Fortsetzung von Band 1 ist wieder äusserst turbulent, manchmal fast schon ein bisschen überdreht. Aber es wird auch klar, dass die Kinder immer noch unter dem Verlust eines Elternteils leiden und sich auf ihre Art gegen Veränderungen zur Wehr setzen.
