The article empirically estimates the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on European Union exports. Using a disaggregated approach at the four-digit Standard International Trade Classification level and two different methods - the methods of Baldwin-Murray and Clague - it estimates the overall impact of NAFTA and identifies the commodities of European exports that would bear the brunt of trade diverting effects. The results show that the European Union will suffer only modest export losses in the aggregate. On a disaggregated level, however, a considerable share of exports will be displaced in a narrow range of products. (Aussenwirts (Zürich)/SWP)
