Brenner, Professor für Jüdische Geschichte und Kultur in München (zuletzt "Kleine jüdische Geschichte, ID-A 14/12), hat die 1. umfassende wissenschaftliche Darstellung der jüdischen Geschichte in beiden Teilen Deutschlands von der Befreiung bis zur unmittelbaren Gegenwart zusammengestellt (vgl. O. Guez: "Heimkehr der Unerwünschten", zuletzt ID-A 23/11), für die er namhafte Historiker/-innen gewinnen konnte. Das Buch ist chronologisch gegliedert, innerhalb der einzelnen Teile werden wichtige Aspekte jüdischen Lebens in der jeweiligen Periode dargestellt, eingebettet in die gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Bundesrepublik. Entwicklungen in der DDR, wo es vergleichsweise nur sehr wenige Juden gab, werden aber immer wieder vorgestellt und mit denen im Westen verglichen. Eine Zeittafel, Register, Statistiken und eine umfassende Bibliografie ergänzen den Band, der sicherlich zum wissenschaftlichen Standardwerk zur jüdisch-deutschen Geschichte avancieren wird.
