Dabei liegt die Stärke auch in dem, was sie nicht ausschmückt, weil die Fantasie der Leser die Lücken von selbst füllen kann“ (ndr.de). „Ihr neuer Roman ist weder eine Abrechnung mit den „Buddenbrooks“ und deren Autor Thomas Mann, noch eine Überschreibung, sondern möglicherweise eine Ergänzung aus einer anderen, weiblichen Perspektive. Wo Thomas Mann in den „Buddenbrooks“ den Aufstieg und Fall einer Kaufmannsfamilie erzählte, kontrastiert Mahlke in ihrem Roman die Lebensgeschichten der Hausangestellten, Lohndiener und Kinder aus einfachen Verhältnissen mit den Krisen der bürgerlichen Oberschicht... Wichtige Stimmen in diesem vielschichtigen Werk sind Frauenfiguren, die gegen patriarchale Gesellschaftsregeln aufbegehren. Im Kern handelt es sich bei „Unsereins“ um einen historischen Roman, der eine Parallelerzählung zu den berühmten „Buddenbrooks“ wagt und sprachlich auf gekonnte Weise mit dem gediegenen Tonfall Thomas Manns spielt.
