Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "The field of graphic design has been affected by several factors including history, society and especially art and design movements. [...] In recent years the understanding of the importance of graphical and artistic meaning of book covers has surged and became of more and more importance to graphic designers and publishing houses alike. Rather than using of the book covers only as a protective sleeve, their design developed quickly with the consistently developing technology. [...] Since the book covers have an aim to transmit a message to the reader, designers and publishers are following the new trend and movements in the society to convey their message to the readers in a powerful way. They are one of the most important factors that help in engaging the attention of readers. They are not only the jacket of a book, but also first communication barrier between reader and author and first informative page for the reader. Book covers can be related with story of the book they contain or summarize the book in an abstract or even tangible method or they establish a link with art and design movements of the time of the book. That is why visual language of book cover design style effected by new trends, art and design movements, political situations and society. In this age, visuality has significant role among people. The aim of this research is to critically examine and reveal book cover's design styles and focus on the years from 1890 to 2018 to show how book covers are influenced by art and design movements of their respective time periods. This research focuses on 5 previous significant art and design movements which are Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Dadaism, Swiss Style and Postmodernism and analyses their historic and graphic styles. The reason I chose these specific art and design movements which are Art Nouveau, Dadaism, Bauhaus, Swiss Style and Postmodernism is that all of them has strong graphic languages on their time and they still play significant roles nowadays. After a thorough analysis of the time periods, I will redesign a book cover of 'The Sun and Her Flowers', a best-seller from 2017 by Rupi Kaur with these art and design movements to show what kind of book cover design could have been created if they would be published in their specific time periods."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This project aims at designing an interior space for the existing brand Victoria's Secret and adapting it to the cultural context, and characteristics of Berlin, and the local preferences for the shopping experience in Berlin. [...] My proposal is to bring Victoria's Secret to the heart of Berlin in Mitte and design a proposal of how lingerie can be branded and experienced in the specific context of Berlin through a new spatial concept for the interior organization, furniture, materials, customers' needs, and facilities for events. [...] This research aims to show how context, culture, and social structure can affect an interior space in space organization, materiality, and furniture. It shows a diverse concept and distinctive design of the brand Victoria's Secret in different locations, and also proposes a design of the brand Victoria*s Secret in Berlin/Mitte taking consideration of Mitte's characteristics and the Victoria's Secret characteristic as well. The research begins by explaining what a retail design is, and how it has been presented in the past to our current day. Furthermore, going more into retail design studies and explaining types of fashion retails. Then being more specific and explaining lingerie retail design for a brand such as Victoria's Secret. Additionally, explaining the shop exterior and, interior features in different locations around the world such as the United States of America, the Middle East, the United Kingdom, and Asia. Furthermore, explaining how the context and culture of each location are affecting the interior design of the Victoria's Secret Retail stores. Next, an explanation of the proposed retail design (the Victoria's Secret) in Berlin, which is based on the effect of the context on a retail design, the aim is to create a new experience of Victoria's Secret in Berlin by creating an interior retail space that aims to show Berlin/Mitte's vibe and culture through it. The proposed retail design is more like an exhibition and a boutique at the same time. The Berliner Victoria's Secret is having few characteristic of the actual existing brand. Such includes products, space division (display and exhibition section, cashier, sitting lounges, fitting rooms, and makeup sections), and the primary colors of Victoria's Secret (black, white, grey, and pink). It is different from the actual Victoria's Secret shop in the furniture, materiality, and the usual open closet look or bedroom that the shop has in almost all the branches. The Victoria's Secret of Berlin will have a sequence and more systematic approach of the spatial divisions; it is more of a pavilion or open interior, without interior walls, and the diverse spaces within the shop are being defined by the glowing columns that will exhibit the products inside. The aim of the shop is to represent Berlin/Mitte in a retail interior space, also a space that exhibits Victoria's Secret products. To sum up, franchises can have different space design in different space design in different locations around the world. Such includes the context, culture, and social structure of specific locations."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This paper seeks to define a potential practice for converting spaces into stages and to establish to what extent, from a designers’ point of view, can the know-hows of scenography positively exert influence on exhibition design, installation, and performance art. My goal is to study how the practice of staging has adapted to new fields of design and to analyze the contemporary approaches to stage. My objective is to launch a revitalized intellectual dialogue between different disciplines on how the use of scenographic characteristics may affect the qualities of distinct design spheres. I consider that this research will potentially provide answers about the artistic expectations of the contemporary audience and its response to the modifications that occur to such and everchanging subject like culture and art. Therefore, an analysis of design factors and visual challenges is necessary to help develop a better understanding of what the contemporary stage could be. This can then be implemented on the design of various performative shows, with the hope that it will produce a positive shift in the industry."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "Relationship between the fashion- and design industry has the purpose of fulfilling a lifestyle dream for the consumer. Lifestyle inspires, motivates people, and contributes the individual’s way of life. Fashion wear and interiors support the consumer’s look and wanted impression to others. This thesis is about the relationship between fashion design and Interior design, and how it represents a lifestyle. I have done literature review looking at the collaboration between the fashion and interior design, and how far back I can find a connection between the two. I also added three case studies showing how interior has been used within fashion brands today. As a design proposal I have designed an interactive art show where the interior design is the fundamental frame for achieving the complete lifestyle experience of a chosen fashion brand. By using various elements of interior design, art and architecture the aim was to create a holistic design show, which enhances the brand identity and not only showcasing a piece of clothing. [...] Research questions: 1 What influence does interior design and fashion design have on society? 1. How does fashion design and interior design communicate to the consumer? 2. How does fashion brands use interior design to commutate their fashion brand?"

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This thesis deals with the implementation of Off-grid-water-systems to mobile Tiny Houses. It gives an introduction and overview on the whole Tiny-House-topic and its movement, specialized on tiny homes on wheels in Germany. Due to their mobility the autarchic energy and water supply comes into focus. It will be explained what it means to live off-grid, going into detail about water-recycling-systems and introducing examples for these systems. As conclusion the different water plants are compared and evaluated according to their adequacy for mobile Tiny Houses. After that the design part of the Tiny House comes into focus, where the water system(s) is supposed to be integrated. In the context of a case study analysis a Tiny House, a caravan and a prefabricated house are evaluated according to their functionality, colors and materials and their water supply system. At the end of this thesis the best solution for the Off-grid-water-system(s) and the mobile Tiny House will be combined. For that will be clarified how much water a person needs. The thesis will conclude with a design proposal implementing the knowledge that have been collected through the research conducted on the previous chapters. The design proposal is adjusted to the German law, since the regulations in Germany are more stringent than in many other countries."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "According to the Mental Health Organization, some of the most effective procedures to prevent and relieve stress are: maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, meditation, as well as muscle relaxation and aromatherapy. A specific category of spaces, that served the purpose of maintaining or regaining ones personal well-being throughout history, were public bathing facilities. This thesis is analyzing this category, its characteristics and what it is, our modern society is longing for in a space that promotes our general well-being. It is an overall aim to provide a fresh perspective on a topic that has been of great interest throughout history while drawing connections to the increasing numbers in mental and physical health, especially but not exclusively for inhabitants of big cities such as Berlin."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "The research focuses on the concept of integrating shared work spaces in hotel lobbies to attract millennial travellers and remote workers in Berlin. The aim of this research is to analyse methods in which city hotels can successfully meet the needs of millennial travellers, as well as present a design solution for the lobby space of the Crowne Plaza Berlin City Centre, which struggles to attract both millennial travellers and citizens of Berlin. […] The paper first looks into the generation of millennials and defines their preferences and expectations in terms of work and travel. From their the report discloses current hotel trends and strategies applied to attract this generation. Furthermore, the research reveals the characteristics of contemporary work spaces and examines how they are shaped. Moreover, the research explains the concept of co-working spaces and describes some motivations of co-workers and what is necessary for co-working. In addition, the research presents two case studies, the Soho House Berlin and the Michelberger Hotel, two hotels that successfully integrated shared working areas in their lobby space and managed to achieve a popularity among remote workers and citizens in Berlin. Therefore, the case studies […] help identify the qualities of the space in terms of service, layout and design. Hence, the knowledge gained can be directly applied to the design proposal of the Crowne Plaza Berlin City Centre. […] the research contains a qualitative research method in form of a professional interview with Michael Mücke, the spokesman of the management board of Albeck & Zehden Hotels & Gastronomie, to detect design challenges attracting contemporary travellers and to discover existing strategies applied. Based on all these findings, a design proposal for the lobby space of the Crowne Plaza Berlin City Centre is provided."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "The Danish architect and lighting designer Prof. Merete Madsen, Ph.D., depicts how daylight as an omnipresent element is often taken for granted and therefore not sufficiently explored in terms of its space-defining attributes in architecture. She specifies daylighting as a composition of different ‘light zones’ and ‘shadow zones’ and further distinguishes natural light zones into ‘reflected sunlight- zones’ and ‘daylight-zones’ (Madsen 2004, 53). The latter can be determined with architectural openings, cavities, or any kinds of structures that enable the permeability of direct daylight incidence (see figure 1). On the contrary, adjacent shadow zones occur due to the interference of daylight by physical structures that frame these openings. As a consequence, they ‘can be regarded as a space within a space’ (Wänström Lindh 2012, 61). Expanding on Madsen's thoughts, this bachelor thesis examines how and to what extent daylightzones can act as spatial creators. It is analyzed how individuals connect with daylight-zones by perceiving them, and thereby build a subjective understanding of architectural space. At that, the recipient's conception of space is formed independently from physical borders. Therefore, the thesis investigates spatial conceptions that do not build upon haptic boundaries but rather on the interconnection of a physical space with both observer and its natural light environment. In doing so, it proposes a shift of priorities in the consideration of architectural space: from separative to connecting, from objective to subjective, from immobile to ever-changing. […] this thesis acts as an invitation to question one‘s understanding of spatiality in architecture and strengthen an acknowledgment for the interplay of nature, architecture, and one‘s mind when experiencing space. The goal is to raise awareness for relations and interactions initiated by daylight, which lead to an engaging conception of space. At that, the research is meant to contribute to the scientific knowledge about the space-defining characteristics of daylight and thus, expand the methods available to implement daylight-zones in the architectural field. Moreover, the collected findings will serve as a design tool to work more consciously with existing as well as newly implemented light zones. Therefore, the thesis does not only foreground the importance of light incidence in architecture but also strives to raise awareness to a subjective perception of daylight-zones. The investigation first examines how architectural space can be visually perceived. Second, it focuses on how the process of visual perception implies different spatial connections and interactions and, third, it explains how they can be created by daylight-zones. These interrelations will be defined and analyzed in order to draw conclusions on how daylight-zones influence one‘s conception of space."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "There are more than 60 million people living in displacement situations worldwide due to natural disasters or conflicts. The recent refugee crisis has led to increased displacement rates and humanitarian organizations have set up temporary camps to accommodate those displaced populations. In most cases, refugees and internally displaced persons will end up living in these camps for years. However, despite existing for so long, refugee camps are still conveyed as inhumane in either the treatment or housing of refugees as they lack security and many other important aspects. All shelters that are designed and provided by NGOs and humanitarian agencies are all made same, out of the same light-weight structure that cannot withstand the extreme cold weather nor the high heat of the summer, and do not provide the inhabitants with comfortable conditions, which makes these sites more dangerous to live in. Aside from issues that arise such as health care, education, water, the design of shelters is most of the time forgotten, even though shelters are highly susceptible to extreme weather and difficult conditions, which can in extreme situations eventually lead to death. It is necessary to provide shelters in emergency situations to protect the population and help against their climate, and to give them some privacy. As it is also very important to increase the thermal performance of emergency shelters to enhance their interior comfort. Long-term encampment is an increasing aspect of a rising refugee crisis. There is hence the need to ensure that shelters have an environment that is secure and acceptable. […] The thesis will first look into the meaning of a shelter, through defining it , explaining its classifications and categories that are defined by various NGOs. Then the concept of thermal will be further explained. After having done that, an analysis of the existing refugee shelters in Jordan will then lead to further understanding the difficulties refugees face on a daily basis in their shelters, which will all eventually lead to a possible solution to help refugee regain their safety and ensure their thermal comfort."
