Content: In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. Two years later the Soviet Union disintegrated. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union discredited the idea of socialism for generations to come. It was seen as representing the final and irreversible victory of capitalism. This triumphal dominance was barely challenged until the 2008 financial crisis threw the Western world into a state of turmoil. Through analysis of post-socialist Russia and Central and Eastern Europe, as well as of the United Kingdom, China and the United States, Socialism, Capitalism and Alternatives confronts the difficulty we face in articulating alternatives to capitalism, socialism and threatening populist regimes. Beginning with accounts of the impact of capitalism on countries left behind by the planned economies, the volume moves on to consider how China has become a beacon of dynamic economic growth, aggressively expanding its global influence. The final section of the volume poses alternatives to the ideological dominance of neoliberalism in the West. Since the 2008 financial crisis, demands for social change have erupted across the world. Exposing the failure of neoliberalism in the United Kingdom and examining recent social movements in Europe and the United States, the closing chapters identify how elements of past ideas are re-emerging, among them Keynesianism and radical socialism. As those chapters indicate, these ideas might well have potential to mobilise support and challenge the dominance of neoliberalism

Series Statement: Housing and society series
Content: This topical book transforms the analysis of housing problems into a lively, interesting and contentious subject of social scientific study, addressing themes of residential experience, inclusion/empowerment, sustainability and professionalism/managerialism, which lie at the heart of the housing and social policy debate. Each chapter considers a specific social category - such as class, gender, or disability - and evaluates the experience and understanding of housing and social policy under this category. With innovative approaches to conceptualising housing and a clear, defined structure, Housing and Social Policy encourages students and practitioners in both arenas to think reflexively about housing as a central instrument of social policy and social experience.
Content: Introduction / Nigel Sprigings and Peter Somerville -- What has the state ever done for us? / Bill Spink -- Housing policy and social justice / Nigel Sprigings -- Places, 'folk devils' and social policy / Charlie Cooper -- Housing, class, and social policy / Peter Somerville -- Ethnicity, 'race' and policy issues / Malcolm Harrison -- Housing, gender and social policy / Joan Smith -- Disability and inclusive housing design / Jo Milner -- Squatting since 1945 / Kesia Reeve -- Housing and urban regeneration policy / John Pierson and Claire Worley -- Housing and social policy futures / Peter Somerville and Nigel Sprigings.

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This open access book provides an exploration of the consequences of the ontological differences between natural and social objects (sometimes described as objects of nature and objects of thought) in the workings of causal and agency relationships. One of its important and possibly original conclusions is that causal and agency relationships do not encompass all of the dependent relationships encountered in social life. The idea that social reality is contingent has been known (and largely undisputed) at least since Wittgenstein's 'On Certainty', but social science, and most notably economics has continued to operate on the basis of causal and agency theories borrowed or adapted from the natural sciences. This volume contains essays that retain and justify the partial or qualified use of this approach and essays that totally reject any use of causal and agency theory built on determined facts (closed systems). The rejection is based on the possibly original claim that, whereas causation in the objects of the natural sciences reside in their properties, human action is a matter of intentionality. It engages with critical realist theory and re-examines the role of free will in theories of human action in general and economic theory in particular."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This open access book examines from a variety of perspectives the disappearance of moral content and ethical judgment from the models employed in the formulation of modern economic theory, and some of the papers contain important proposals about how moral judgment could be reintroduced in economic theory. The chapters collected in this volume result from the favorable reception of the first volume of the Virtues in Economics series and represent further contributions to the themes set out in that volume: (i) examining the philosophical and methodological fallacies of this turn in modern economic theory that the removal of the moral motivation of economic agents from modern economic theory has entailed; and (ii) proposing a return descriptive economics as the means with which the moral content of economic life could be restored in economic theory. This book is of interest to researchers and students of the methodology of economics, ethics, philosophers concerned with agency and economists who build economic models that rest in the intention of the agent."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "Green space has become a major issue in European cities in recent years as a result of enhanced environmental awareness, urban marketing, planning policy and growing population densities. Up to now, however, the subject of sports areas and grounds has attracted little research, despite the fact that since the First World War such public and private areas -- from football pitches and running tracks to golf courses and tennis courts -- have often comprised one of the most important and extensive types of green space in the European city. This book presents a pioneering comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of the development, use and impact of sports areas in the European city from the start of the 20th century up to the present time. Employing a range of historical, spatial and ecological approaches it examines when and why sports areas evolved, the contribution of municipalities and the private sector, the role of gender and class, and the impact on the urban landscape and ecology. Chapters cover urban sports areas in Finland, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, illustrating the contrasts in the provision of green space across Europe."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "Peter Dormer presents a series of lively, clearly argued discussions about the relevance of handcraft in a world whose aesthetics and design are largely determined by technology. Indeed, one of the key questions discussed in the book is what makes the difference between a craft and a modern technology. What role does the craftsperson play in the professional life of the designer? Is the craft of design itself threatened with deskilling by technology? And what are we to make of the emergence this century of that separate arts activity we call 'the studio crafts'. What are the cultural barriers that prevent the studio crafts from being regarded simply as either art of design? Most important of all, what are the values that encourage people to want to make things themselves despite the apparent marginality of crafts? These are among the questions discussed in this collection of essays written by distinguished writers who include T.A. Heslop, Slade Professor of Art, University of Cambridge; Dr Paul Greenhalgh, Head of Research at the Victoria and Albert Museum; and Rosemary Hill, writer and broadcaster and biographer of Pugin."

Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "This is the most comprehensive guide to the current uses and importance of case study methods in social research. The editors bring together key contributions from the field which reflect different interpretations of the purpose and capacity of case study research. The address issues such as: the problem of generalizing from study of a small number of cases; and the role of case study in developing and testing theories. The editors offer in-depth assessments of the main arguments. An annotated bibliography of the literature dealing with case study research makes this an exhaustive and indispensable guide." --
