Melanchthon, Philipp, eigentlich P. Schwarzerd, deutscher Reformator, geb. 16.2.1497 Bretten, Baden; gest. 19.4.1560 Wittenberg; Humanist, bedeutendster Mitarbeiter Martin Luthers; 1518 Professor für griechische Sprache in Wittenberg; schloss sich hier bald an Luther an und verfasste 1520/21 die "Loci communes" ("Hauptpunkte"), eine erste Zusammenfassung von Luthers Rechtfertigungslehre. Melanchthon war an mehreren Religionsgesprächen beteiligt (1519 Leipzig, 1529 Marburg, 1540 Worms, 1541 Regensburg, 1557 Worms). 1530 verfasste vor allem er die "Confessio Augustana" (Augsburgisches Bekenntnis) und deren Verteidigung, die Apologie. Seine Bereitschaft zu Nachgiebigkeit und zu vermittelnden Formulierungen hat der Reformation manche Wege geebnet, doch auch, besonders in der Abendmahlslehre, die Gegnerschaft strenger Lutheraner eingetragen. Wegen seiner humanistisch geprägten Universitäts- und Schulreform erhielt Melanchthon den Ehrentitel "Praeceptor Germaniae" ("Lehrmeister Deutschlands").
