Content: This paper provides an exhaustive description of the gender system in the Tsumkwe Juǀ’hoan variety of Ju (Kx’a), a gender system that is largely insensitive to number and natural sex distinctions. The paper also highlights some important points of divergence in a closely related variety due to contact interference while nevertheless maintaining culturally salient aspects of the gender system.

Content: Background: C-reactive protein (CRP) has emerged as an important predictor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). To facilitate clinical and public health interventions, CRP thresholds have been defined as follows: low-risk (<1.0 mg/L), average-risk (1.0–3.0 mg/L), and high-risk (>3.0 mg/L). However, these cut-off thresholds are based on distributions in Western populations, and do not distinguish between men and women. Methods: We examined CRP distribution, gender difference, and determinants of CRP concentrations ranging from 0.02 mg/L to 10.0 mg/L, in 4923 Korean adults (2248 men; 2675 women) who received health checkups at Gangnam Severance Hospital from March 2006 to May 2007. Results: The distribution of CRP was highly skewed toward lower concentrations. CRP was higher in men than women, and the cut-off thresholds for the high-risk tertile of CRP concentrations corresponded to 1.01 mg/L in men and 0.62 mg/L in women, based on the current study population. Age, male gender, cigarette smoking, physical activity, body mass index, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, γ-glutamyltransferase, and uric acid were independently associated with CRP concentrations. Conclusions: CRP distribution and gender difference in Korean adults were found to be different from previous Western studies, although similar risk factors influence CRP concentrations. Our results suggest that ethnicity and gender specific cut-off thresholds for CRP concentrations should be taken into consideration in CVD risk assessment. Clin Chem Lab Med 2009;47:863–9.

Content: This paper focuses on the changing interaction between Taiwanese entrepreneurs and local Chinese governments. Through the analysis of this changing process, it can be seen that Taiwanese businesses are a special “asset” of Chinese governments. The main argument of this paper is that both central and local governments in China have strategic considerations in respect of Taiwanese businesses. The Chinese central government values Taiwanese businesses because more Taiwanese investment in China strengthens the Beijing government in negotiations with the Taibei government. Nevertheless, since the Kuomintang (KMT) (Guomindang) regained power in 2008, the strategic value of Taiwanese businesses in the cross-Strait relationship seems to have decreased. The central government has created a profitable macro-environment enabling local officials to give a warm welcome to Taiwanese businesses. Chinese local governments value Taiwanese businessmen not only because of the central government’s deliberate policy but also because they are pursuing their own self-interest. This paper firstly focuses on the changing interaction between Taiwanese businesses and Chinese local governments. It then further analyses the different but complementary interests of both central and local governments in China in relation to Taiwanese investors. (JCCA/GIGA)

Content: In the Wadden sea of Sylt Littorina littorea constitutes a wide spreaded species of snails. Since L. littorea possesses no defence mechanisms against settling by epibionts such as chemical barricades, the periwinkles are often strongly overgrown by barnacles and larval states of mussels and oysters. The most common epibiont on L. littorea is the barnacle Balanus crenatus. In this study we examine the effects of barnacle overgrowth on the agility of L. littorea. In order to analyse the influence of heavy overgrowth, individuals were sampled, weighed and categorized. Three experimental groups, two with contrasting severity of overgrowth and one with removed barnacles, were tested. Experiments revealed that heavy barnacle overgrowth affected the mobility of the periwinkles substantially. Moreover snails with removed barnacles performed as successful or occasionally more successful than snails without barnacles. This might demonstrate a certain training effect of snails with removed barnacles due to their adaptation to a heavier weight load.

Content: Background: Increased uric acid is associated with the metabolic syndrome, conditions linked to oxidative stress and insulin resistance. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now considered a hepatic manifestation of insulin resistance. However, little has been written regarding the association between uric acid and NAFLD. Methods: We examined the association between uric acid and the presence of NAFLD in 3768 Koreans (2133 men, 1635 women; aged 20–75 years) in a health examination program. Uric acid quartiles were categorized separately as follows: Q1: ≤291.5, Q2: 291.6–333.1, Q3: 333.2–380.7, and Q4: ≥380.8 μmol/L for men; Q1: ≤202.2, Q2: 202.3–232.0, Q3: 231.1–267.7, and Q4: ≥267.8 μmol/L for women. Hepatic steatosis was diagnosed based on abdominal ultrasonographic findings by hyperechogenicity of liver tissue, difference of echogenicity between the liver and diaphragm, and visibility of vascular structures. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for NAFLD were calculated across each quartile of serum uric acid. Results: The prevalence of NAFLD was 25.8% (32.2% in men and 17.4% in women). After adjustment for age, body mass index (BMI), smoking, regular exercise, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the ORs (95% CIs) for NAFLD according to each quartile of uric acid were 1.00, 1.55 (1.13–2.14), 1.77 (1.30–2.41), and 2.01 (1.45–2.78) for men and 1.00, 0.69 (0.40–1.20), 1.12 (0.67–1.88), and 1.94 (1.21–3.13) for women. Conclusions: Serum uric acid is independently associated with the presence of NAFLD, and uric acid may be a useful additional measure in assessing the risk of NAFLD in the clinical setting. Content: This paper focuses on three levels of agents involved in the reform and performance of the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China: one outsider - the supervisory state-party organ(s) - at the top, and two insiders: managers in the middle as well as workers at the bottom. The paper identifies four distinct stages in the evolution of the enterprise system. The first stage was the pre-reform period characterized by a strong top and a weak middle and bottom, the period of strong outsider control. The second stage, during the 1980s, was mostly characterized by a weak middle with a strong top and bottom; there emerged in this stage two tiers of collusion involving both insiders and an outsider, withthe upper hand being held by the outsider. The third stage, the 1990s,was characterized by a strong middle and a weak top and bottom; this period was plagued by the problem of insider control, although the insiders still had to collude with the outsiders to a certain extent. Finally, we are now observing the transition from de facto insider control to dejure insider control that has occurred over the past few years. We find that over the course of all these changes, while the dual collusion led to expropriation of state incomes (i.e., enterprise profits), the problem of insider control has led to asset stripping and diversion by the insider agents.
