Kein Werk zur Männerbewegung /-forschung der letzten Jahre, das nicht von den Arbeiten des australischen Soziologen Donnell beeinflußt wäre! Im vorliegenden Band, 1995 im Original erschienen, entwirft der Autor sowohl in seinem theoretischen Rahmen von der "hegemonialen Männlichkeit" als auch in der praktischen Verifikation durch Männerbiographien ein schlüssiges Erklärungsmodell für den Kontrast zwischen kollektiver Privilegiertheit und persönlicher Unsicherheit, der als Schlüsselsituation der gegenwärtigen Männlichkeitspoltik gilt. Dabei zieht Donell den Bogen vom Beginn der Männlichkeitswissenschaft durch die Psychoanalyse Freuds bis zur heutigen Auseinandersetzung der Männerbewegung und -forschung mit der durch den Feminismus ausgelösten "Geschlechts"-Debatte (sex/gender-Problematik).
