Titus Müller schreibt exzellent recherchierte historische Romane (zuletzt "Nachtauge", ID-A 14/13). Im vorliegenden werden die Ereignisse der Märzrevolution 1848 in Berlin thematisiert. Hannes lebt vor dem Oranienburger Tor, wegen der rauchenden Schornsteine "Feuerland" genannt, unter ärmlichsten Verhältnissen. Er führt neugierige Bürger, die Armut besichtigen wollen, durch sein Viertel. Dabei lernt er Alice kennen, Tochter des Kastellans des Berliner Schlosses, die dort in Wohlstand lebt. Beide fühlen sich sofort zueinander hingezogen. Hannes möchte dem Elend entkommen, Alice sieht die Ungerechtigkeiten ihrer Zeit und ist beeindruckt von Hannes Ehrgeiz und Willensstärke. Wenige Tage nach ihrer 1. Begegnung brechen die Unruhen zwischen dem preussischen König und den Aufständischen aus. Anhand des Wegs der beiden jungen Leute lernt der Leser die unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse kennen, sieht den Kampfeswillen der Hoffnungslosen, die Überheblichkeit der Mächtigen und das Ringen der gemäi︢gten Kräfte.
