Abstract: Abstract: The prevalence of allergic diseases has been increasing recently. Allergy has various symptoms. Allergic eye diseases (seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, giant papillary conjunctivitis, contact blepharoconjunctivitis) are common in atopic patients. Treatment options for allergic conjunctivitis include local and systemic antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, dual-action agents, vasoconstrictors and corticosteroids. Treatment seems easy, but inappropriate therapy – in extreme cases – can lead to vision loss. Corticosteroid eyedrops provide effective relief of symptoms, however, their use is limited due to their severe side effects. Both steroid-induced cataract and steroid-induced glaucoma are dangerous for vision. The characteristics, frequency and risks of these side effects have been studied widely in adults, but there are very few studies focused on children. According to the present studies, the side effects of topically administered corticosteroids appear more often in children than in adults. Orv Hetil. 2019; 160(9): 329–337.

Abstract: Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, single stranded RNA molecules which play regulatory roles through posttranscriptional regulation of their target genes. Based on our current knowledge, more than 30% of the human protein-coding genes are regulated by miRNAs, hence influencing basic cellular mechanisms including cell proliferation, differentiation and cell death. Differential miRNA expression pattern has been detected in many different types of tumors and, recently, several publications have referred to miRNAs as potential therapeutic targets. Through adjustment of miRNA levels by artificial miRNAs administration or miRNA inhibition, we can influence not only one target gene but also complex biological pathways. Pituitary adenoma is the second most frequent intracranial tumor. In spite of this, the molecular mechanism of the pituitary adenoma formation is not yet entirely revealed. Recently, more and more evidences have been found suggesting that miRNAs have an important role in pituitary adenoma pathogenesis. Here, we summarize the recent results related to this role and highlight the therapeutic potentials in pituitary adenomas. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(7): 252–259.

Abstract: A tanulmány a gödöllői német nemzetiségi kisebbség helyzetét és nyelvoktatási lehetőségeit elemzi. A vizsgálat alapja a Gödöllői Petőfi Sándor Általános Iskola német nemzetiségi nyelvoktatásának bemutatása.

Abstract: The authors summarize the basic objectives and scope of the Hungarian Cancer Registry. They review more than 100-year history of the national cancer database and its effects on current cancer data collection activities, which is outstanding in Europe. The compilation deals with the development of information technology, covers points of principle and practical issues such as parallel display and evaluation of mortality and morbidity statistics and their national and international importance concerning public health. The authors underline that reliable data collection and services of the National Cancer Registry are important for the society because they are public health issues with a critical importance for a better understanding of risk factors, prevention and patient care. Restructuring and European harmonization of the Hungarian cancer system are inevitable using a reliable information exchange and service, taking into account national specificities and international requirements. Abstract: Abstract: In a previous issue of this journal the authors presented and summarized the basic objectives and tasks of the Hungarian National Cancer Registry positioned in an international environment. The recent publication is a continuation of the previous one. Based on the presentation and analysis of current statistical data, the public health background with the possible risk factors is examined. Considering changes in recent years, the mortality data are relatively stable, although slightly wavering. The trends are promising in some cancers (for example lip and oral cavity, breast, prostate cancers) however. Contrary to the barely changing nature of the total cancer deaths the number of annually reported new cases has increased significantly, which indicates a more effective role in both diagnostics and therapy. In light of the above, it is confirmed that the restructure of the national oncology care system and the European conformation is inevitable. Orv. Hetil., 2017, 158(3), 84–89.

Abstract: Abstract: Introduction: Idiopathic strabismus sursoadductorius is characterized by an overaction of the inferior oblique (IO) muscle, with elevation of the eye in adduction. This can result in chronic headache, eye pain, diplopia and abnormal head posture. Aim: Presentation of clinical results after graded recession of inferior oblique overaction (IOOA) in strabismus sursoadductorius. Method: During a period of 6 years (2012–2017) we performed a dosed transposition of IO muscle in 53 patients in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Semmelweis University and analyzed the clinical results retrospectively. The mean age was 12.8, min–max: 2–51 years. The transposition of the muscle (8 mm, 10 mm or maximal) was performed because of IOOA and was planned depending on the vertical deviation (VD) in maximal adduction. In case of maximal transposition, the insertion of IO was placed under the lateral part of the lower rectus muscle. We evaluated the squint angle in five positions of gaze preoperatively and postoperative 1 week, 1 month and 3–6 months. We examined best corrected visual acuity, binocular vision and complications after surgery. Results: Postoperatively 25 patients had acceptable stereopsis (Titmus 5). Visual acuity remained stable after surgery in all cases. The VD measured in maximal adduction changed with a decrease of 7.5° when 8 mm transposition was performed, and changed with a decrease to 12°, when maximal recession was performed. The mean reduction of VD was 17.8 prism dioptres (PD) after 1 week (p 〈 0.01), 20.5 PD after 1 month and remained stable during a follow-up of 3–6 months. Conclusion: Graded recession of inferior oblique muscle is a suitable proposed procedure in patients with marked strabismus sursoadductorius. The rates of functional under- or overcorrection or other complications are low. Orv Hetil. 2019; 160(27): 1064–1069.
