Der Autor ist ehemaliger Direktor der Archenhold-Sternwarte sowie Gründungsdirektor des Zeiss-Großplanetariums Berlin und renommierter Experte für die Geschichte der Astronomie. In diesem Buch geht er dem Phänomen nach, dass der Mensch im Laufe der Geschichte sowohl in der Kunst als auch in der Wissenschaft stets von einer gewissen Sehnsucht nach Harmonie und Schönheit beseelt war und ist und, davon geleitet, hinter allem ein Prinzip vermuten und erforschen will, das eine harmonische Ordnung, ein einfaches Grundprinzip für die komplexen Vorgänge wie z.B. die Naturgesetze darstellt. Die Frage ist: Gibt es dieses einfache, "schöne" Grundprinzip wirklich oder wollen die Menschen, getrieben von ihrer Sehnsucht, es nur überall gerne sehen und forschen aber vergeblich danach? Mit dieser Fragestellung durchstreift der Autor die Epochen der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, von der vorwissenschaftlichen Zeit über die Antike, Renaissance, Kepler, Newton, Hegel und Einstein bis hin zu den subatomaren Welten und das Zukunftsbild der "Supersymmetrie". Eine interessante, auch philosophische Perspektive.
