Dem Neuropsychologen und Linguisten Steven Pinker ist diese Auffassung schon lange ein Dorn im Auge. In seinem neuen Buch versucht er sie zu widerlegen, indem er sie auf Hunderten von Seiten mit den jüngsten Erkenntnissen der Neuro- und Kognitionswissenschaften, der Säuglingsforschung und der Evolutionsbiologie konfrontiert. So weit, so gut. Pinker will aber außerdem nachweisen, dass die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften und sogar nicht wenige Biologen nach wie vor verleugnen, dass es eine genetisch verankerte menschliche Natur gibt - und welche verhängnisvollen Folgen es hat, wenn man ihre Existenz bestreitet. Doch offensichtlich hat Pinker nur ein anderes, äußerst pessimistisches Menschenbild, und das stützt sich in 1. Linie auf die waghalsigen und ideologisch verdächtigen Annahmen der Evolutionspsychologie. Davon abgesehen ein in hohem Maße anregendes und sprachlich virtuoses Buch.
