Content: This paper reports on a randomized survey experiment among one thousand eight hundred and forty households, designed to compare pen-and-paper interviewing (PAPI) to computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI). The authors find that PAPI data contain a large number of errors, which can be avoided in CAPI. The authors show that error counts are not randomly distributed across the sample, but are correlated with household characteristics, potentially introducing sample bias in analysis if dubious observations need to be dropped. The authors demonstrate a tendency for the mean and spread of total measured consumption to be higher on paper compared to CAPI, translating into significantly lower measured poverty, higher measured inequality and higher income elasticity estimates. Investigating further the nature of PAPI's measurement error for consumption, the authors fail to reject the hypothesis that it is classical: it attenuates the coefficient on consumption when used as explanatory variable and the authors find no evidence of bias when consumption is used as dependent variable. Finally, CAPI and PAPI are compared in terms of interview length, costs and respondents' perceptions

Content: On March 5, 1770, after being harassed for two years during their occupation of Boston, British soldiers finally lost control, firing into a mob of rioting Americans, killing several of them, including Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave and sailor, the first African American patriot killed. The aftermath of this 'massacre' led to what was eventually the American Revolution. The importance of the event grew, as it was used for political purposes, to stoke the fires of rebellion in the colonists and to show the British in the most unflattering light. The Boston Massacre gathers together the most im

Content: The Gikuyu Collection covers cultural, economic and historical information circa 1900 to 1995. Two documents were compiled by two famous Kenyans; these works provide a very comprehensive and intimate account of Gikuyu culture and recent history. Four documents provide information on pre-colonial Gikuyu culture and society. Ten documents are based on findings of multidisciplinary research conducted, from 1967-1973, in a Gikuyu village called Ngecha; focusing on Ngecha's physical geography and resident families and historical settings, as well as aspects of change in behavior and family life. Other documents are based on work in different Gikuyu villages in 1980s and 1990s. These deal with the lives of women, patterns of marriage across generations, trends in adolescent sexual behavior and fertility, household economic strategies, and continuities in the cultural values of children. A document reviews works on the Mau Mau Rebellion in light of women's participation

Content: Adapting Detective Fiction is a study of specific instances of adaptation, with close readings of both the originating sources and adapted texts. But it is also more than this. It is a study of the politics of representation in the last decades of the twentieth century, and the role television detective fiction plays in this. It is about the mutually-informing interrelation of cultural texts and political rhetoric, about the connection between the popular-cultural depiction of crime and criminality and how we come to understand human behaviour and culpability; most of all, it is a detailed consideration of what the process of adaptation reveals about the shifting nature of the world in which we live. With specific reference to television series such as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Cadfael, and Midsomer Murders, Adapting Detective Fiction uses adaptation as the basis for an exercise in later twentieth-century cultural history, illustrating the fundamental role detective fictions play in popular beliefs about the nature of crime and Englishness.

Content: World War II was crucial in the development of the emerging Civil Rights movement, whether through the economic and social impact of the war, or through demands for equality in the military. This period was characterized by an intense transformation of black hopes and expectations, encouraged by real socio-economic shifts and departures in federal policy. During the war, black self consciousness found powerful expression in new movements such as the "Double V" campaign that linked the fight for democracy at home for the fight for democracy abroad.

Content: This volume presents a series of essays, written by Plains scholars of diverse research interests and backgrounds, that apply postprocessual approaches to the solution of current problems in Plains archaeology. Postprocessual archaeology is seen as a potential vehicle for integrating culture-historical, processual, and postmodernist approaches to solve specific archaeological problems. The contributors address specific interpretive problems in all the major regions of the North American Plains, investigate different Plains societies (including hunter-gatherers and farmers and their associated

Content: This innovative book offers you a detailed explanation of the way that an A-GPS server operates from a practical point of view. You learn how A-GPS improves critical aspects of GPS, such as time-to-first-fix (TTFF) and yield. The book focuses on handset-assisted A-GPS, where the server can make use of additional information and perform more effective hybrid calculations. You gain insight into factors affecting accuracy and how these errors can be minimized using A-GPS. Moreover, this unique resource includes example code in Java for all key functions, along with sequence diagrams in UML that help ensure a solid understanding of the material.
