Inhalt: "Historians have begun to explore why and how eating has become problematic for more and more people. But so far little attention has been given to the problem of appetite -- the changing ways that the appetite for food is formed or how the views of scientific and medical experts on the subject have developed over time. In this book, Elizabeth Williams traces the history of academic inquiry into appetite's nature and functioning in the two centuries between 1750 and 1950, from the mid-Enlightenment to the dawn of big science. She reveals how appetite and eating came to be an object of scientific study by turning to advances in physiology, natural history, medicine, and, from the late nineteenth century, psychology and ethology. The author's goals are capacious, however, for she aims not only to convey the development of the science but, in so doing, to root out the cause of our modern nutritional disarray"--

Inhalt: The focus of this book is to create a comprehensive analysis of cartilage injury and repair strategies. Twenty chapters cover proven and emerging procedures and methodologies. Readers will be able to understand the clinical problem, appropriate diagnosis, and repair strategies relevant to first line and secondary cartilage repair procedures.
Inhalt: Cartilage Repair Strategies is a comprehensive update of the present state of cartilage repair and regeneration. The information in this volume addresses what methods are effective, what methods are safe, and what methods will lead to an alteration in the short history of articular cartilage injury repair. Contributors present examinations of a variety of topics including the structure and function of articular cartilage, the evaluation of cartilage repair techniques, and the latest cartilage sensitive imaging techniques. Several chapters anticipate new and emerging cartilage repair techniques such as second generation ACI, resorbable scaffold-based repair, and arthroscopically performed cartilage transplantation and include descriptions of the rationale and application of these procedures. Leading experts present updates on current and emerging methodologies, making Cartilage Repair Strategies a unique and essential reference.

Inhalt: A second primary cancer (SPC) is a new primary cancer developing in a person with a history of cancer in a new site or tissue and subsequent to the initial cancer. Advances in cancer treatment have led to marked improvements in cancer cure rates over the past 30 years, and the control of risk factors has further increased longevity. Still, cancer survivors are at increased risk not only for recurrence of the primary cancer but also for the development of second primary malignancies, the latter being especially true for survivors of childhood cancer. SPCs are now more common, and research into them has intensified. This monograph provides a synthesis of the current research on SPC, culminating in pertinent summary charts, covering the whole spectrum of first and second primary cancers and the association between them. Readers will gain a general understanding of the epidemiology and of the excess risk of SPCs following an implicated first malignancy. The known or suspected etiologic factors for SPCs are identified, and the field is further narrowed to those factors that are modifiable in practice. Effective preventive measures that might reduce the burden of SPC, both for individuals and across at-risk populations, are presented.Providing practical guidance in terms of possibilities and priorities, this monograph will be a valuable tool for oncologists, general practitioners and health administrators
