Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) war ein weltberühmter Naturfoscher, einer der letzten Universalgelehrten und zweifellos einer der mutigsten und neugierigsten Wissenschaftler seiner Zeit. Rastlos und voller Forscherdrang bereiste er Südamerika, später noch Russland und Zentralasien. Seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten erstreckten sich über mehrere Disziplinen und machten ihn weltweit bekannt, viele bedeutende Persönlichkeiten (Goethe, Jefferson, Simťn Bolývar, Darwin ...) schätzten ihn und seine Werke. Die Autorin, bereits durch mehrere Werke und Preise bekannt, skizziert hier spannend und ansprechend das Leben und Werk des Wissenschaftlers. Wichtig ist ihr dabei vor allem, den Leser daran teilhaben zu lassen, wie Humboldts Bild von der Natur sich im Laufe seiner Forschungsarbeit immer mehr zu einer Vorstellung als ein großes organisches Ganzes entwickelte und damit wegweisend für die nachfolgenden Wissenschaftler und das heutige Verständnis von Natur und Umwelt war.
