Mit dem vorliegenden Band werden die Biografien in der "Arena-Bibliothek des Wissens" (zuletzt "Goethe ..." von A. Venzke, BA 4/07) um einen wichtigen Namen erweitert: Der Mönch Martin Luther spaltete mit seiner öffentlich ausgesprochenen Kritik an den Missständen der Kirche Europas Christen in 2 Parteien. In bewährter Aufmachung werden erzählende Kapitel aus der Ich-Perspektive Luthers mit Sachkapiteln zu Schule, Glauben, Politik und historischen Ereignissen seiner Zeit kombiniert. Venzke zeichnet ein anschauliches Bild jener Zeit, vermittelt grundlegende Eindrücke von der Persönlichkeit Luthers und spart auch kritische Punkte (Judenhass) nicht aus. Schwarz-Weiß-Abbildungen historischer Gemälde und K. Puths Comiczeichnungen illustrieren die Biografie; dem inhaltlichen Verständnis dienen Glossar und Zeittafel am Ende des Buches. Während der allseits bekannte Zitelmann-Titel (BA 3/96) sich eher an ältere Jugendliche richtet, ist der vorliegende Band ebenso wie "Luther entdecken" von A.
