Bevor er zum vielgerühmten Romancier wurde, schrieb Fontane die "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg", mit der er seiner Heimat ein fortwährendes Denkmal setzte. Der fünfteilige Film verquickt, exakt nach Fontanes Vorlage, Landschaftsimpressionen mit seinem untrüglichen Gespür für das Leben der Landbevölkerung. Spielszenen, dramatisierte Anekdoten und eingelagerte Minifernsehspiele sind bewusst komödiantisch und kraftvoll gestaltet. Noch während er an den "Wanderungen" arbeitet, kommt ihm die Idee zu einem historischen Roman, gleichfalls sein erster Ausflug in die Literatur, abseits von Reportagen und Reiseberichten. "Vor dem Sturm" greift die Zeit vor den Befreiungskriegen in Preußen 1913-1815 thematisch auf und inszeniert vor authentischer Kulle eine konfliktreiche Liebesgeschichte. Auch in seinem letzten, zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichten Roman "Der Stechlin" bleibt Fonante seinem Anspruch, klassenübergreifende Gesellschaftskritik durch authentische Darsteller seiner Lebensumwelt zu üben, treu. Regisseur Rolf Hädrich gelint eine detailtreue Umsetzung des anspruchsvollen Spätwerks, dessen Handlung Fontane selbst einmal so wiedergab: "Zum Schluss stirbt ein Alter, und zwei Junge heiraten sich."
