Paul Kennedys Buch eröffnet neue Einsichten in einige der wichtigsten politischen Fragen unserer Zeit. Die UNO steht beinahe unentwegt in der Kritik, aber sie ist dennoch nur schwer zu ersetzen. Ihre bemerkenswerteste Leistung besteht vermutlich darin, daß sie trotz aller Krisen bis heute überlebt und zugleich ihr Aufgabenspektrum immer mehr erweitert hat. Kein anderes Forum der Welt bietet einen besseren Rahmen zur friedlichen Beilegung von internationalen Konflikten und zur Organisation humanitärer Aufgaben. Auch eine demokratische Weltregierung ist zumindest der Idee nach in den Vereinten Nationen angelegt. Die Zukunft der UNO ist deshalb auch eine Frage nach der Zukunft der einen Menschheit. Paul Kennedy erläutert in seiner konzisen Darstellung die historischen Wurzeln der UNO und ihrer Funktionen, fragt nach der Effizienz der Vereinten Nationen in der Vergangenheit und heute, und er versucht einzuschätzen, inwieweit sie gerüstet ist, um die Herausforderungen der Gegenwart und der Zukunft zu meistern. - Sind die Vereinten Nationen noch zeitgemäß? Inhalt: Today we are witnessing an increased use of data visualization in society. Across domains such as work, education and the news, various forms of graphs, charts and maps are used to explain, convince and tell stories. In an era in which more and more data are produced and circulated digitally, and digital tools make visualization production increasingly accessible, it is important to study the conditions under which such visual texts are generated, disseminated and thought to be of societal benefit.
