Trotz des großen Aufschwungs der Heine-Forschung in den letzten Jahrzehnten gibt es erstaunlicherweise keine Dokumentation und keine Gesamtdarstellung seiner Wirkungsgeschichte. Der spannungsreiche Prozess dieser oft mehr politischen und ideologischen als literarischen Auseinandersetzung mit Heine wird im vorliegenden Werk mithin erstmals ausführlich von Heines Tod 1856 bis zur Gegenwart dargestellt, und zwar anhand von Kritiken, Essays, Feuilletons, Reden, Pamphleten, literarhistorischen Schriften, Versepen und Gedichten. Der Band I befasst sich mit dem Zeitraum 1856-1906, als das „Buch der Lieder“ zum erfolgreichsten deutschen Gedichtband, zugleich dessen Autor für Nationalisten und Antisemiten zur Hassfigur wird.
