Ein Fernschreiben des Generalstaatsanwalts der DDR fordert die Strafverfolgungsbehörden der Bundesrepublik zur Mithilfe bei der Klärung eines Falles auf. An einem Autobahnrastplatz bei Leipzig ist die Leiche eines Jungen gefunden worden, der Schuhe aus der Bundesrepublik trug. Wenig später ziehen die DDR-Behörden ihr Hilfeersuchen zurück. Dem Hamburger Hauptkommissar Paul Trimmel geht der Nebensatz mit den westdeutschen Schuhen nicht aus dem Kopf. Sein Ostberliner Kollege Karl Lincke, mit dem er früher im Reichskriminalamt zusammen gearbeitet hat, versichert ihm zwar: "Der Fall ist tot für euch". Trotzdem beginnt Trimmel zäh mit eigenen Nachforschungen. Vergebens klingelt er an der Tür einer Villa an der Hamburger Elbchaussee. Der vermögende Chemiker Erich Landsberger - unehelicher Vater des Kindes, das die Mutter Eva Billsing in der DDR als ihren toten Sohn Christian identifiziert hat - ist mit seinem zweiten Jungen nach Frankfurt umgezogen. Als Trimmel ihn dort aufsucht, weicht der Witwer den Fragen des Kriminalbeamten kühl aus. Er kann aber nicht verhindern, dass dieser den auffälligen Dialekt seines Sohnes vernimmt. Auf eigene Faust fährt Hauptkommissar Trimmel mit seinem Wagen über die Zonengrenze in Richtung Westberlin. Bei Leipzig täuscht er eine Panne vor, mietet ein Taxi und sucht nach Eva Billsing, die im Vorort Markkleeberg wohnt... (Quelle: www.prisma-online.de)
