Am Firmament glaubte man – unter anderem – ablesen zu können, wie das gemeinschaftliche Leben auf der Erde organisiert bzw. zu gestalten sei. Umgekehrt beeinflussten soziale Konventionen den Blick zu den Sternen. Vorstellungen über die Ordnung von Kosmos und Gesellschaft standen in einer Wechselwirkung. Diesem Verhältnis zweierlei Ordnungsmodelle geht Peter Fischer, fokussiert auf die Frühe Neuzeit, in seiner historisch-wissenssoziologischen Studie nach. Er zeigt, wie die mit dem Namen Kopernikus verbundene wissenschaftliche Revolution dieser Zeit die »neue Astronomie« etablierte, deren Theorien bald zur Deutung sozialer Phänomene herangezogen wurden. Natur und Soziales wurden dabei gleichermaßen innerhalb der Naturphilosophie diskutiert, wie das sich durchsetzende mechanische Weltbild belegt. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert kommt es zwischen Natur- und Sozialphilosophie zu einem Bruch, der das Wissen über Natur und Gesellschaft nachhaltig prägt und über den heute, unter dem Eindruck ökologischer Krisen, in der Soziologie kritisch nachgedacht wird. In diese Debatten interveniert der Autor durch Rückschau auf die Anfänge des Fachs.
