Content: "Throughout this manual, each reader will be encouraged to keep those little, more or less personal bents which he has learned to treasure and which have developed a significance for him in successful study. To attempt to regiment the study process into a narrow pedagogical routine will as truly destroy the love of learning as would an enforced uniform eliminate one's chance of making his apparel truly a part of him. Of course, there is the possibility that the student will discover that he has been carrying with him an excessive load of buttons or ribbons, or that his old garments have not really fitted; he may even discover that for many years some features of his intellectual person have not even been clothed. There is nothing to be found in the way of a get-knowledge- quick formula. Efficient studying still asks of the student that he put in plenty of time in actual study. On the other hand, amount of time expended may not be a reliable index of efficiency. Even in those institutions which are recognized as centers of the finest higher education, and with requirements for admittance on a level which should insure successful adjustments, there are always individuals who fail to make the best of their capacities. And many of these find themselves in a state of befuddlement or chaos which they unfortunately are unprepared to correct. Here is where a pamphlet or a course of instruction might offer a suggestion not previously thought of or attempted, and which will pay dividends not only in measures of school success, but also in poise and reduction of strain coupled with a feeling of knowing and expressing one's own ability"--Preface. Series Statement: Studies in adult education
Content: "This book by Dr. Thorndike and his coworkers is a sequel to the volume entitled "Adult Learning" and performs a similar service for anybody who is interested in improving his own interests or those of other in adult years. This book states the main results of experiments carried out in 1931 to 1934 on changes in the intensity of interests with age, on the possibility of modifying and improving interests in adult years, and on means and methods of doing this effectively. Facts are also presented concerning individual differences in interests among adults, and differences between old and young. There are practical discussions of the means and methods desirable in the teaching of adults"--Jacket. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2014 APA, all rights reserved)
