Das Buch widerlegt die verbreitetete These von der "Mechanisierung des Weltbildesʺ. Historiker der Naturwissenschaften, aber auch Naturphilosophen und Philologen gehen seit mehr als fünfzig Jahren davon aus, es habe eine gradlinige Entwicklung von der scholastisch-aristotelischen Naturphilosophie hin zur Mechanik eines Galilei oder Newton gegeben. Am Beispiel der Impetustheorie, die erstmals im 7. Jahrhundert in Europa auftritt und als Theorie einer bewegenden Kraft die erste wirksame Alternative zur Bewegungslehre des Aristoteles darstellt, zeigt Grün, daß in jenen frühen Abweichungen von der Bewegungslehre des Aristoteles keine mechanistische Theorie der Natur angelegt ist. Vielmehr weist die Impetustheorie, der die Wissenschaftsgeschichte voreilig das Attribut Vorläuferin der Mechanikʺ verliehen hat, voraus auf die pantheistische Naturphilosophie von Schelling, Goethe und Hegel.
