    Content: Mit dem Brief des Paulus an die Römer hat sich Melanchthon sein Leben lang beschäftigt. Eine Einleitung zu einer Vorlesung stammt bereits aus dem Jahr 1519. Ihr folgten 1520 eine lateinische Textausgabe mit theologischer Einleitung sowie eine Rede über die Lehre des Paulus. 1522 erschien Melanchthons erster Römerbriefkommentar mit Luthers Vorrede in Nürnberg. Dieser hatte das Manuskript ohne Wissen und sehr zum Unwillen des Autors heimlich in den Druck gegeben. Melanchthons frühe Römerbriefauslegung, die erstmals in moderner deutscher Übersetzung präsentiert wird, belegt seine enge theologische Verbindung mit Luther und gehört unmittelbar zur Entstehungsgeschichte seiner Loci communes theologici von 1521. Zwei weitere Arbeiten von 1529 und 1532 zeigen Kontinuität und Weiterentwicklung von Melanchthons rhetorischer Auslegungspraxis. [Melanchthon German V. Melanchthon's Early Interpretations of the Letter to the Romans] Melanchthon spent his entire life preoccupied with Paul's Letter to the Romans. An introduction to a lecture dates as far back as 1519, followed in 1520 by a Latin text edition with a theological introduction and a speech on Paul's teachings. In 1522, Melanchthon's first commentary on the letter to the Romans with Luther's preface appeared in Nuremberg. The latter had secretly passed the manuscript on to the press without the author's knowledge and much to his displeasure. Melanchthon's early interpretation of the Letter to the Romans, which is presented for the first time in a modern German translation, proves his close theological connection with Luther and directly belongs to the genesis of his Loci communes theologici of 1521. Two further works from 1529 and 1532 show the continuity and further development of Melanchthon's rhetorical interpretation practice

[Loci praecipui theologici nunc denuo cura et diligentia. Summa recogniti multisque in locis copiose illustrati 1559. Latin-German Philipp Melanchthon's »Loci praecipui theologici«, in the final edition of 1559, are his mature theological opus magnum, and together with Calvin's »Institutio« they are the most influential dogmatics of the reformation. This book represents the first translation of the text in a Latin-German edition. The philological work was done by Basel classical philologist Peter Litwan, assisted by classical philologist Florence Becher-Häusermann. The theolocial editorial was done by Sven Grosse, professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at Staatsunabhängige Theologische Hochschule Basel. The edition is planned in two volumes.

Ediert werden so wichtige Lehrstücke wie die Lehre von der Kirche, von den Sakramenten und von der Prädestination, mit denen der späte Melanchthon Position innerhalb der reformatorischen Debatten bezieht. Wichtig ist zudem auch seine Trostlehre »De calamitatibus et de cruce et de veris consolationibus«, welche die Frömmigkeit des Luthertums nachhaltig prägen sollte. Der Band wird abgeschlossen mit Registern für Bibelstellen, Begriffe, Nichtbiblische Namen, sowie Orts-, Völker- und Gruppennamen, welche sowohl die Einträge für Bd.1 als auch für Bd.2 enthalten. Volume 2 of the bilingual edition of the "Loci praecipui theologici" of 1559 now contains on 518 pages the second half of Melanchthon's major work. It includes such important doctrinal pieces as the Doctrine of the Church, of the Sacraments and of Predestination, with which the late Melanchthon took a position within the Reformation debates. Also important is his teaching on consolation, "De calamitatibus et de cruce et de veris consolationibus", which was to have a lasting influence on the piety of Lutheranism. The volume is concluded with indexes for biblical passages, terminology, non-biblical names, as well as place, people and group names, which contain the entries for both Volume 1 and Volume 2.

    Content: Fast seine gesamte Wittenberger Tätigkeit hindurch hielt Melanchthon sonntags Vorlesungen insbesondere für ausländische Studenten, die dem deutschen Gottesdienst nicht folgen konnten. Bei seinen Erklärungen des Bibeltextes schöpfte er aus der Fülle seines theologischen, historischen, naturkundlichen etc. Wissens. Drei dieser Sonntagsvorlesungen werden exemplarisch übersetzt und kommentiert. In seine Vorlesungen streute Melanchthon viele Anekdoten aus Antike und Literatur und aus Begegnungen etwa mit Dürer, Luther, Kurfürst Friedrich d. Weisen ein. Sie wurden von Studenten aufgeschrieben und sind meist nur handschriftlich überliefert. Diese Anekdoten und Geschichten, als »Dicta Melanthonis« bezeichnet, werden hier erstmals in Übersetzung samt Kommentar vorgestellt. Sie zeigen eine fast völlig unbekannte Seite Melanchthons: den großen Geschichtenerzähler. [Sunday lectures and anecdotes] During almost all of his time in Wittenberg, Melanchthon gave lectures on Sundays, especially for foreign students who could not understand the German service. For his explanations of the Bible text he drew from his profound theological, historical and biological knowledge. By way of example, the volume contains translations of three of these Sunday lectures, including comments. Melanchthon sprinkled his lectures with various anecdotes from the ancient world, from literature and from encounters with Dürer, Luther, and Elector Frederick the Wise. They were written down by students and have mostly only been handed down in handwriting. These anecdotes and stories, known as »Dicta Melanthonis«, are presented here for the first time in translation and with commentary. They show an almost completely unknown side of Melanchthon: the one of a great storyteller.
