Series Statement: Women in Development and Gender Study
Content: Between 2017 and 2019, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank, in collaboration with the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) of Sri Lanka, completed a pilot study in Sri Lanka with the goal of developing guidance on good practice in the measurement of women and men's work through household surveys. The study was designed to enable a comparison of the outcomes of two types of household surveys, namely, the labour force survey (LFS) and the multitopic living standards survey (MLSS). This new framework recognizes that people may engaged in multiple working activities within the same period, thereby enabling a complete accounting all work performed. An additional important development was the adoption of an extended set of labour underutilization indicators to supplement the unemployment rate. This report presents a first summary set of the findings of the pilot study. The findings are being used to generate guidance on the measurement of labour across different types of household surveys. While highlighting issues of measurement, the report also emphasizes the valuable data that can be generated if the guidelines and standards are implemented, such as the more comprehensive measurement of all the working contributions of men and women

Content: We have entered a new era where some concepts of the complex community of microorganisms (microbiota comprising bacteria, fungi, viruses, bacteriophages and helminths) are being re-discovered and re-visited. Microbiota and human interaction is not new; they have shared a long history of co-existence. Nevertheless, the opportunities to understand the role of these microorganisms in human diseases and to design a potential treatment were limited. At present, thanks to development of innovative and cutting-edge molecular biological and microbiological technologies as well as clinical informatics and bioinformatics skills, microbiome application is moving into clinics. Approaches to therapy based on prebiotics, probiotics and lately on fecal microbiota transplantation has revolutionized medicine. Microbiota outnumbers our genes and is now regarded as another organ of the body. The gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiota display a well-documented symbiotic relationship. Disruption of intestinal microbiota homeostasis—called dysbiosis—has been associated with several diseases. Whether dysbiosis is a cause or consequence of disease initiation and progression still needs to be investigated in more depth. The aim of this book is to highlight recent advances in the field of microbiome research, which are now shaping medicine, and current approaches to microbiome-oriented therapy for gastrointestinal diseases. Content: This textbook, now in its third edition, offers a practical introduction to probability with statistical applications, covering material for both a first and second undergraduate probability course. The author focuses on essential concepts that every student should thoroughly understand. The content is organized into brief, easy-to-follow chapters, motivated by plenty of examples. The first part of the book focuses on classical discrete probability distributions, then goes on to study continuous distributions, confidence intervals, and statistical tests. The following section introduces more advanced concepts suitable for a second course in probability, such as random vectors and sums of random variables. The last part of the book is dedicated to mathematical statistics concepts such as estimation, sufficiency, Bayes' estimation, and multiple regression. This third edition includes a new chapter on combinatorics and a more distinct separation between discrete and continuous distributions. Some of the longer chapters in the previous editions have been divided into shorter chapters to allow for more flexible teaching. Probability with Statistical Applications, Third Edition is intended for undergraduate students taking a first course in probability; later chapters are also suited for a second course in probability and mathematical statistics. Calculus is the only prerequisite; prior knowledge of probability is not required.
