1949 ist das Jahr der doppelten Staatsgründung und des Beginns der zweiten Demokratie auf deutschem Boden. Die ersten Bundestagswahlen bringen Konrad Adenauer ins Kanzleramt, Theodor Heuss wird Bundespräsident, Bonn Hauptstadt der Bundesrepublik. In der DDR wird Wilhelm Pieck Präsident, Ministerpräsident Otto Grotewohl. Christian Bommarius erzählt so kundig wie kurzweilig die Geschichte des langen Jahres 1949, das bereits 1948 einsetzt, als mit Währungsreform und Auftrag zur Verfassungsbildung die Weichen in Richtung Bundesrepublik gestellt wurden. Und 1948 blockiert auch die Sowjetunion den Zugang zu West-Berlin, eine Blockade, die fast ein Jahr andauert, die abgeschnittene Stadt kann nur durch die Luftbrücke der Alliierten mit dem Lebensnotwendigen versorgt werden. Bommarius schildert zentrale und marginale Episoden aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Kultur und Alltagsleben.
