"Vier Frauen – vier Generationen, erzählt in einem der wesentlichen Epen der österreichischen TV-Geschichte. Am Anfang, um die Jahrhundertwende, steht Augustine, genannt Gusti. Sie ist die Tochter einer Heimarbeiterin und eines Landarbeiters und geht, um dem kinderreichen Elternhaus zu entkommen, als Dienstmädchen nach Wien. Vom Neffen ihres Dienstherrn geschwängert, kommt nach einer im Gefängnis verbrachten Schwangerschaft ihre Tochter Marianne auf ein paar Wolltüchern in einer Toreinfahrt zur Welt. Marianne, im Ersten Weltkrieg Schweißerin, verliert 1918, inzwischen in Frauenfragen engagierte Arbeiterrätin, ihren Arbeitsplatz an ihren aus dem Krieg zurückgekehrten Mann. Doch ihr Fluchtversuch aus der Ehe endet in einer neuen Schwangerschaft. Elisabeth, Mariannes älteste Tochter, hat nichts gegen geschenkfreudige Kavaliere und bleibt nach einer Affäre mit einem Nazi im Österreich des Jahres 1939 mit einer unehelichen Tochter, Marlene, sitzen. Frauenschicksale, von der Monarchie bis zur 68er-Bewegung gleich – scheinbar. Denn unter der Alltagsoberfläche zeigen sich Veränderungen der Frauenrolle nur sehr subtil." (cover)
