But when Vega sees an omen in the sky8212 one she cannot ignore8212 she is forced to leave the protective boundaries of the valley. Yet the outside world is much more terrifying than Vega could have ever imagined. People are gravely sick8212 they lose their eyesight and their hearing, just before they lose their lives. But Vega has a secret: she is the Last Astronomer8212 a title carried from generation to generation8212 and she is the only one who understands the knowledge of the stars. Knowledge that could hold the key to a cure. So when locals spot the tattoo on Vega's neck in the shape of a constellation8212 the mark of an astronomer8212 chaos erupts. Fearing for her life, Vega is rescued by a girl named Cricket who leads her to Noah, a boy marked by his own mysterious tattoos. On the run from the men hunting her, Vega sets out across the plains with Cricket and Noah, in search of a fabled cure kept secret by the astronomers. But as the line between friends and protectors begins to blur, Vega must decide whether to safeguard the sacred knowledge of the astronomers...or if she will risk everything to try to save them all."
Content: Biographisches: "Shea Ernshaw is the author of A History of Wild Places , the New York Times bestseller The Wicked Deep , Winterwood , and A Wilderness of Stars . She is the winner of the 2019 Oregon Book Award. She lives in a small mountain town in Oregon and is happiest when lost in a good book, lost in the woods, or writing her next novel." Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 15, 2022 A girl carries a lifesaving secret on her skin. Seventeen-year-old Vega's life has been one of secrets whispered to her by her mother, mysteries passed down through generations of astronomer daughters and the marks of the Astronomer tattooed onto their necks. Vega and her parents live in a remote valley, hiding from the dangerous outlaw Theorists who believe the Astronomer has the answer to the consumption, a mysterious, rapidly spreading illness. But Vega's mother is dying of the consumption, and after a century of waiting, a sign appears in the sky as two eastern stars finally align. As the Last Astronomer, Vega must find the Architect so they can travel to the sea and save humanity before it's too late. But the Architect is not quite what Vega expected. Noah is young like her and equally haunted by the secrets they carry and the mission they share. As they run away from those who wish to do them harm, Vega and Noah's journey and personal connection feel inevitable from the start. With a vibe reminiscent of old Westerns, this evocative, slow-moving novel unveils its secrets little by little with unconvincing worldbuilding that wobbles on the central reasoning for the Astronomer-Architect setup. The love story between Noah and Vega is rushed and unearned, and the characters are barely developed. Vega and Noah are assumed White. Atmospheric but ultimately underwhelming. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 15, 2022 Grades 9-12 Ernshaw, the best-selling author of The Wicked Deep (2018), spins a magical, romantic tale of teen girl Vega, secret inheritor of the title of Last Astronomer, searching for a way to save the planet and people she loves. Vega has never left her home valley, heeding warnings from her late mother, but when cosmic omens inspire her to venture out, she soon discovers why she had been forbidden: a devastating plague is spreading death and destruction. This refreshing apocalyptic fairy tale features unique characters and emotional plotlines that add a host of new worlds to the genre. When Vega's identity is exposed and her safety compromised, she must team up with friends Cricket and Noah to escape her pursuers and find the key to saving her people. What ensues is a wild adventure beneath the stars, wherein Vega must choose whether she will share the knowledge she was born to protect or use her gifts to help those in need. Vega’s mother is the Astronomer, a custodian of celestial knowledge whose powers are passed matrilineally through the generations. Vega, who has never left their isolated rural valley, knows she will one day inherit the mantle, but it occurs sooner than expected when, after a sign in the stars foretells an omen, Vega’s mother dies, leaving her alone to venture beyond the valley. Vega seeks the Architect, a man tasked with leading her on a destined quest to save humankind from the consumption, a lethal illness. While she was expecting the Architect to be a learned philosopher, she instead finds charming teenage Noah. Together the duo must contend with supply scarcity, extreme and dangerous weather, and violent fanatics who are hunting for the Astronomer. Mystery and romance unfurl at an unhurried clip, and Vega’s absorbing first-person narration lends immediacy to this existential tale, which evokes an old western feel and hints at a larger potential world. Vega is described as having copper-colored skin. Ages 14–up. Agent: Jess Regel, Helm Literary. " Rezension(5): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from December 1, 2022Gr 7 Up- Vega, 17, lives in the valley under the protection of her mother, however, one day she sees a sign in the sky and is compelled to venture out of the valley to help save mankind. An illness is spreading and people are dying. After her mother dies, she and her father leave the protection of the valley. Her father carries medicine while Vega carries the secret that she is the Last Astronomer and must find The Architect to save the world from demise as Earth is no longer safe. Ernshaw wastes no time drawing readers into the story and creating tension as the plot thickens. With an ominous tone throughout as the characters meet outlaws, scavengers, and theorists, the story moves at breakneck speed. Readers will not leave this one on the shelves. The author has created an original idea allowing readers to think about astronomy and how it relates to the Earth in an easy-to-read novel with intriguing characters. This appears to be the first book of what has the potential to be a popular series. Characters are fair-skinned and described as freckled with dark hair. Others are not described but envisioned with weathered and rugged features. VERDICT Highly recommended. A great addition to any YA collection and for readers who enjoy wondering about the night sky.- Karen AlexanderCopyright 2022 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "

Content: " Few songs have captured the contradictions and ambiguities of the 1960s as memorably as California Dreamin', the iconic folk music single that catapulted the Mamas &,the Papas into rock and roll history. In All the Leaves Are Brown, author Scott Shea details how John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Michelle Phillips, and Mama Cass Elliot became standard-bearers for California counterculture, following their transformation from folk music wannabes to rock sensations and chronicling the tumultuous events that followed their unexpected success. Shea gives a definitive account of the group's short time together, from their hitmaking approach with legendary producer Lou Adler to John's unique songwriting to tours and friendships with other musicians riding the folk-rock wave. He explores the emotional vicissitudes that came with being in the Mamas &,the Papas, from Cass's unrequited love for Denny, his affair with Michelle, and the ebb and flow of dysfunction in John and Michelle's marriage. And he explains how it all came to a crashing end with John's brainchild, the Monterey Pop Festival, which should have launched the group even further into the musical stratosphere, but only served to be their undoing. Drawing on new interviews with former bandmates, session musicians, family members, and many others, All the Leaves Are Brown is a layered, revelatory tale of overnight stardom and its many pitfalls. "
Content: Rezension(1): "Library Journal: Drawing on previously published memoirs of band members and new interviews with those who knew them, radio producer Shea crafts an impersonal but intriguing compilation of the accounts, song development, and relationship entanglements that led to the fast rise and extraordinary fall of the Mamas &,the Papas. The book primarily focuses on John Phillips, from his troubled childhood as the son of an abusive, alcohol-addicted parent, to his complicated first marriage and his attempts to become a serious folk musician. Then Phillips met aspiring model Michelle Gilliam, and their relationship became the catalyst for his best-known songs, California Dreamin' and Monday, Monday. Phillips soon brought Cass Elliot into the group, along with tenor Dennis Doherty. As a band, the Mamas &,the Papas recorded five albums, with 10 hits, in the 1960s. Drugs, affairs, jealousies as Mama Cass becomes the breakout star, and an embarrassing set as the closing act for Phillips's Monterey International Pop Festival soon led to the band's demise. VERDICT Shea's matter-of-fact journalistic style prevents sensationalism from overtaking this study of the Mamas &,the Papas' powerful influence and importance. "

    Series Statement: Nightmare Before Christmas
Content: "Jack and Sally are truly meant to be ... or are they? Sally Skellington is the official, newly-minted Pumpkin Queen after a whirlwind courtship with her true love, Jack, who Sally adores with every inch of her fabric seams — if only she could say the same for her new role as Queen of Halloween Town. Cast into the spotlight and tasked with all sorts of queenly duties, Sally can't help but wonder if all she's done is trade her captivity under Dr. FInkelstein for a different — albeit gilded — cage. But when Sally and Zero accidentally uncover a long-hidden doorway to an ancient realm called Dream Town in the forest Hinterlands, she'll unknowingly set into motion a chain of sinister events that put her future as Pumpkin Queen, and the future of Halloween Town itself, into jeopardy. Can Sally discover what it means to be true to herself and save the town she's learned to call home, or will her future turn into her worst... well, nightmare?"
Content: Rezension(1): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: April 15, 2022 Sally must save her town from a sleeping curse before Halloween comes. Sally is at last married to Pumpkin King Jack Skellington. Nothing could be more perfect as they depart for a one-day honeymoon to Valentine's Town. But after a chance meeting with elegant Ruby Valentino, Queen of Valentine's Town, Sally begins having doubts about her newfound status as Pumpkin Queen. These doubts only grow upon their return to Halloween Town, as the residents begin pressuring Sally into fulfilling their ideas of a good queen. With Halloween only two weeks away and Jack focused on making the holiday a success, Sally despairs. Upset, she flees to the grove of portal trees, where she is drawn to one with a mysterious hidden door. Loyal ghost dog Zero stops her from passing through it, but on returning home, Sally discovers she may have let a terrible monster out of its prison. With the Sandman on the loose, the citizens of Halloween Town fall under his sleeping spell, and it's up to Sally to save the day. Sally's adventure gives some much-needed expansion to the other holiday worlds and her backstory with Dr. Finkelstein. The perspective through which Sally sees the world keeps the narrative grounded in Halloween Town even while she explores other areas. While some parts of the ending are unsatisfactory, witnessing Sally uncover her true self and come into her own takes readers on a satisfying journey. A delight for both existing fans and newcomers. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: August 1, 2022Gr 7-10- Exactly 50 weeks after the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas , Jack and Sally Skellington have returned from their honeymoon to begin their work as the Pumpkin King and Queen. Unfortunately, Sally finds being a queen rather suffocating and chafes at the drudgery of new gowns and dealing with the mayor all the time as Halloween approaches. When Jack's beloved ghost-dog Zero and Sally accidentally fall into the forgotten world of Dream Town, a series of events occurs that threatens everything she knows and loves. Sally uncovers some family secrets in her search for the answer to her situation. She must decide once and for all if she can be the Pumpkin Queen and save all the holidays for everyone. Ernshaw's atmospheric and spooky writing lends itself well to Burton's world. The adult age of the main characters and the juvenile tone and quick pacing of the novel create a juxtaposition that is questionable but not altogether uncomfortable. Sally's doubts about her suitability for the position she finds herself in will resonate with many readers, but the assumption of familiarity with the characters themselves may keep the story from being accessible to some readers. VERDICT Details about Sally's past and a chance to spend more time with beloved characters will appeal greatly to fans of the original movie but may not tempt others.- Allie StevensCopyright 2022 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. Laure Mesny is determined to make it in the cut-throat world of ballet, and she will do anything to prove that this Black girl can take centre stage. Anything . Even if it means entering into a bargain with a primordial power in the Catacombs beneath Paris. Laure is promised influence and adoration - and she gets it. But that alone is not enough, not for the cruel and privileged people who surround her. Her climb to stardom leaves broken bodies in her wake, some of which aren't her doing. As she finds herself deep within this monstrous world, she is faced with the ultimate choice: will she retreat or succumb to the darkness forever? THERE WILL BE BLOOD. "

But years of being overlooked in favor of her rich, white peers prompts Laure to seek drastic measures. When an opportunity arises, Laure—at the suggestion of a classmate—ventures into the city’s eerie underground Catacombs and bathes in a pulsating river of blood belonging to an eldritch god. But the power she obtains demands more sacrifice than she expected—or is willing to give. As new powers consume her, Laure begins literally transforming into a vicious creature beyond her imagining, threatening everything she’s worked so hard for. Shea’s raw, tension-filled emotional roller-coaster of a novel delivers frighteningly gory depictions of body horror. While the scares are grisly, Shea skillfully uses them to reveal hard truths surrounding institutions that capitalize on exclusion, and to depict the lengths one teen goes for acceptance and recognition.
